WASHINGTON, D.C.—The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the full list of nearly 100 employers that will be available to meet directly with District of Columbia residents at Norton's annual Job Fair, to be held Wednesday, August 1, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center (801 Mount Vernon PL NW). The Fair is free and open only to D.C. residents. Job-seekers must bring proof of D.C. residency (photo ID, voter registration card, pay stub, utility bill or lease).
"Today when online applications are routine, job seekers rarely get the chance to have a face-to-face meeting with an actual employer unless they make it to the interview process," Norton said. "Our Job Fair offers residents a prime opportunity to network and discuss job opportunities with employers who are looking to hire."
The Fair will feature employers from every sector and industry in the D.C. region, including non-profits, private businesses, retail, labor unions, restaurants, hotels and tourism, construction, federal and county governments, law enforcement, apprentice organizations and others. The Fair will also feature stations offering one-on-one consulting with workforce development professionals on applying for a job.

[WardFive] Wrapped Recycling Trucks Hit The Streets
Recycling Trucks Wrapped with New Art to Hit the Streets Beginning Friday
DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities will wrap 15 more DPW recycling trucks with original works from local artists as part of its “Designed to Recycle” project
The Bowser Administration is, once again, wrapping District recycling trucks with original art by local artists. The “Designed to Recycle” initiative, which launched in 2015 with 10 trucks, promotes recycling, invigorates District streets and supports local artists. It also encourages residents of all ages to increase their efforts to reduce landfill waste and pollution. The first two newly wrapped trucks will be in service on Friday July 27. Each week through September 6, two more newly wrapped trucks will be on the streets in all eight wards providing collection service.
“Designed to Recycle” is part of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s mission to expand the creative economy in the District and provide more opportunities for local artists to support themselves. Local artists were invited to submit proposals for the project during spring of 2018. The selected artwork will be printed on vinyl and wrapped on each of the recycling trucks.
“Through the Design to Recycle project, we are able to support and showcase the talent of our local artists, further enhance the visibility of the city’s recycling efforts, and add to the creative landscape of the District in all eight wards,” said Angie Gates, Interim Director for the Commission on the Arts and Humanities who provides funding for the project.
DPW and CAH also partner on the city’s MuralsDC project, which replaces graffiti-tagged walls on buildings with original works of art. New murals are planned for several wards, with installations beginning August.
“Art has been a powerful tool in engaging residents with our agency’s work,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “The wrapped trucks forge a connection between our sanitation teams and the neighborhoods we serve, and our drivers are excited to drive them. We hope these moving pieces of art inspire citizens to remember the vital role they play in the city’s sustainability efforts.”

Mayor Bowser’s ‘Great Graffiti Wipeout’ Cleans Up 902 Graffiti Markings and Removes 3,021 Posters and Stickers Throughout District
Residents, Business Owners Encouraged to Continue to Call 311 to Report Graffiti Vandalism
Eight weeks after the kicking-off an intense focus on beautifying the District on May 24, 2018, the Department of Public Works (DPW) has completed Mayor Bowser’s third annual “Great Graffiti Wipeout.” Working throughout all eight District wards, DPW crews cleaned more than 900 graffiti markings and removed upwards of 3,000 posters and stickers from public spaces.
“Graffiti vandalism is a drain on taxpayer dollars, can lead to decreased property values, and often diminishes residents’ sense of safety,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “Through Mayor Bowser’s 2018 ‘Great Graffiti Wipeout,’ our crews systematically worked their way through the city, aggressively eradicating graffiti and removing old posters and stickers in all corners of the District.”

This year’s Great Graffiti Wipeout began in Ward 1, and then made its way through all eight wards before wrapping up on July 20, 2018. The graffiti removal blitz is in addition to the more than 5,550 311 requests DPW responds to each year to remove graffiti and posters.
DPW cleans graffiti from public and private property using paint or non-toxic solutions that are applied and then removed with a high-pressure water spray, known as a power wash.
Residents should continue to call 311 to request the removal of graffiti or posters and stickers. A waiver of liability form will be provided, which must be signed by the property owner and returned to DPW before abatement will occur on private property.

cheat_training_group Fwd: Open Practice Location Change 7/24
As you may know, we have a free Open Practice session on Tuesday nights, open to any of our current students.The river is not flooded but it is higher than normal summer flows, currently 5.4 ft. Due to this we are going to change our location to Lock 6, the Feeder Canal, where the river is more protected. Lock 6 is located off of the Clara Barton Parkway which is a divided highway, only open to traffic exiting the city at that time. Hello Everyone,--Regarding the water .. here is an ideaMaybe DCWASA can suggest that people turn their water heater up and just run the bath with hot water and let it cool some ... no showers ... and use a bucket to fill first with hot water to wash off after bath. I know that you don't ingest the water during the shower but some people do rinse their mouth by habit while showering and it might get rid of any other concerns of taking showers.Same with washing face or hands after use in bathroom... and for washing dishes (if no dishwasher)... run the hot water and fill a bucket to use ... [WardFive] Rhode Island Ave & Brookland Metro Stations to close July 21 - Sept 3
Neighbors,
Please be aware that TWO Metro stations – Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood and Brookland-CUA – will be closing starting Saturday, July 21, through Monday, September 3 (Labor Day). The shutdown is necessary for Metro to repair the platform at Rhode Island Ave station, Metro's oldest outdoor station.
Here is a quick round-up of what Metro is doing to provide alternatives during the shutdown:
** Free shuttles between stations: Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Fort Totten and NoMa-Galludet U. (See map)
** Free EXPRESS shuttles from closed stations to locations downtown: Metro will run free express shuttle buses during AM/PM rush hours between Brookland and Rhode Island Ave and the areas of Metro Center, Gallery Place and Union Station. (See map)
** G9 all day: The G9, which normally only runs during rush hour along the length of Rhode Island Ave, will operate during all hours the Metrorail system is open. (The G9 was launched in March 2017 after CM McDuffie secured funds for it in the DC budget)
** Temporary dedicated bus lane on Rhode Island Ave NE: Working with DDOT, Metro will establish a new, temporary dedicated bus lane along Rhode Island Ave NE. The lane will operate Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm and is not scheduled to remain in place after the shutdown.
