You are receiving this message because my team and I greatly appreciate your support in my bid for the DC State Board of Education and believe your voice is critical regarding steps forward for education in Ward 5. 

You should have received an invitation from our team for our Ward 5 Education Summit on Monday, July 23 to be held at Carolina Kitchen restaurant. See attached flyer for details. 

The Ward 5 Education Summit is our team's effort to begin necessary conversations, to heighten knowledge of the state of our schools and to increase the urgency of improving our children's learning. 

The Ward 5 Education Summit is an opportunity for all interested parties to do the following:

1) Build a sense of community with other Ward 5 stakeholders

2) Learn about efforts already afoot in/around Ward 5 to improve schools 

3) Share issues that are top of mind to enlist support and take action 

4) To organize in order to take action 

5) Briefly hear from parent, teacher, school system, and non-profit leaders and educational organizations 

Would you be willing to attend the Ward 5 Education Summit and serve as a table facilitator? Table facilitators will play an integral role in helping the conversations we have at the Summit move forward by sharing their experience and rooting conversations in the purpose of the event. To confirm, simply reply saying you're game.

Today we learned of yet another mass shooting.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Rob Hiaasen, 59, a former feature writer for The Baltimore Sun who joined the Capital Gazette in 2010 as an assistant editor and columnist; Wendi Winters, 65, a community correspondent who headed special publications; Gerald Fischman, 61, the editorial page editor; John McNamara, 56, a staff writer who had covered high school, college and professional sports for decades; and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant.  All worked at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

 

At this time, no doubt the media is taking many hits.  Just a few days prior to this shooting, a known Trump supporter called for the "gunning down of journalists", and as recent as this week, the President continued his rhetoric that the media is the enemy. 

 

I was pleased to see that, in spite of very difficult circumstances, the Capital Gazette went ahead and published the newspaper today.  A free Press is an enduring tradition in this country, protected by the U.S. Constitution.  As an admirer of the profession, I salute and commend everyone that is willing to do what it takes to carry on the important role the media plays today. 

Remember we continue to find ways to address the gun crisis we have in the country.  So every Monday from 11am to 1pm, many of us, with a group called "WE THE PEOPLE FOR SENSIBLE GUN LAWS", stand in front of the White House, demanding common sense gun control laws, if you can, please join us this coming Monday.

·        I want to also take the opportunity to ask that you please come out Saturday June 30^th, 2018 (tomorrow) at 10:30am at Lafayette Square, for the Families Belong Together march in Washington DC.  There will be marches organized throughout the country so please RSVP to join on Saturday in Washington, D.C., or to join the event closest to you.   Here in DC, local efforts will be led by the DC Latino Caucus, see attached flyer for more information.

DPW Trash and Recycling Collections to Begin at 6 am Throughout Summer

Earlier Collection Time in Effect from July 3—September 3

 

Summer has arrived in the District and so has the hot weather. With this in mind, trash and recycling crews from the Department of Public Works (DPW) will be starting their daily collection routes one hour earlier at 6 am, beginning Tuesday, July 3. The earlier collection time will remain in effect for the entire summer, ending Monday, September 3.

“With summer temperatures often climbing above 90°, we want to give our crews the ability to start a little earlier in the day when it’s cooler,” said DPW Director Chris Shorter. “By starting collections earlier throughout the full summer, our goal is to make things simpler for the residents we serve.”

To make sure trash and recycling are out for pick-up at the earlier time, DPW’s customers can put their items out starting at 6:30 pm the day before their collections are to be made.  Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day or a sanitation citation may be issued.

More days than not, problems with sitting still, including constant restlessness, pacing, or picking at one's cloths (called psychomtotor agitation by professionals); or the opposite, a slowing of one's movements, talking very quietly with slowed speech (called psychomotor retardation by professionals)
6. Fatigue, tiredness, or loss of energy nearly every day — even the smallest tasks, like dressing or washing, seem difficult to do and take longer than usual
7. Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day (e.g., ruminating over minor past failings)
8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day (e.g., appears easily distracted, complains of memory difficulties)
9. Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideas without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide.

[WardFive] Today is DC Primary Election 2018

If you live in Washington DC, today is DC Primary Day.  Please come out and vote.  I am running for re-election and humbly ask for your vote.  As the DC Statehood Representative in Congress, I have helped move the needle closer to us achieving equality for our Nation’s Capital.  In this 115^th Congress, we now have more co-sponsors and supporters of DC Statehood than ever before; and we are still working on getting support of Republican members of Congress for DC Statehood.

You will also have the opportunity to vote on Initiative 77, which addresses the minimum wage for tipped workers in Washington DC, currently at $3.33.  If passed, this initiative will make the minimum wage for tipped employees in DC, the same minimum wage others make (gradually increasing it, scheduled to be $15.00 by 2026). 

 

Initiative 77 Summary:  If Initiative 77 passes, the minimum wage for tipped employees goes to $15 by 2026, some data suggests that higher wages, in the service industry, reduce sexual harassment for female employees.  In some states where the minimum wage is the same for all, the data also suggests it leads to reducing poverty.  If passed, this law does not prevent anyone from continuing to tip workers.  Opponents argue that DC is unique and has no issue that needs addressing.  They say that DC’s minimum wage workers, specially restaurant workers, make more than the non-tipped minimum wage, and are protected by law to get at least the established minimum wage that others get.  There is also fear that employers could be hurt by higher wages, which could lead to higher prices for consumers, layoffs, and less incentive for employers to expand.
