RE: [WardFive] Re: [Brookland] Franklin St NE

Hi all,
I worked for 2 years to get new sidewalks on Franklin St. The engineers came out and looked at the streets to determine how we can reduce speed on this street. The Crossing Guards have been almost hit several times. In the end d. came back to me and said it is a Ferderal street for 1st Responders and I have to approach Congress. I am well aware of this situation because we had this same fight with all the work on 12th street. I live on Franklin, we still have big trucks rolling through shaking all the homes and the speeding is crazy. I asked for more signs restricting big trucks and stop a sign on 6th/Franklin St.. I had to make at least 20 calls to get these sign walks and disability ramps redone.

The engineers came out 2 times and studied Franklin, but never gave me a clear answer concerning all the issues on Franklin street.

Good evening,

First, I support speed deterring devices like stop signs and speed bumps in some locations.  Speed Cameras are not productively habit forming other than slowing speed at certain areas.  I have witnessed many accidents and many near misses due to the sudden braking because of a late response to a speed camera.  In addition,  I have witnessed many red light camera accidents which would have been just a crime of running a yellow.

This is a dangerous approach to collecting fees.  People are getting hurt and it is endangering other innocent individuals because drivers are swerving to avoiding rear-ending the vehicle in front of them.  in addition, it is probably creating a financial hardship as it relates to repair or valuation of vehicles after accident!

Just my observations!

The studies that have been completed have not demonstrated that speed cameras reduce fatalities; in fact, some of the studies show they increase accidents because people brake suddenly and are not paying attention. Why on earth would anyone want MORE DC government intrusion and less privacy, given this city government's abysmal track record? This place is enough of a nanny state as it is.

The city is now ripping up Franklin Street after putting in new sidewalks and curbs. Now all the dump trucks, speeding cars and tractor trailers can get more air when they run the light at 13th and Franklin because the road will be smooth. No doubt the accidents will increase even more.

We need a speed cameras at the corners of 12th, 13th and 14th on Franklin. Ive tried lobbying for this but it falls on deaf ears which is bizarre because the city would make a FORTUNE in fees from all the speeding and light running. Let me repeat: ITS A MONEY MAKER and could help prevent fatalities.

Still not sure why all of this is getting torn up when it didnt need it. Perhaps to raise our taxes? Seems to me this would be a great time to bury some power lines.

ES on 13th
