[WardFive] What's going on with Ward 5 schools? Come to the DCPS meeting Tuesday, July 24th and find out!

From: Tara Jamison tara.m.jamison@gmail.com
Hello Ward 5 Neighbors,

Below are the Top Five Reasons Why You Should Attend the Ward 5 State of Schools event on Tuesday, July 24th (see invite below):

#5 - Even if you do not have school age children, the availability of quality schools in your neighborhood directly impacts the value of your home.

#4 - If you plan to have kids and assume that you can just engage when you're ready to enroll, you may be disappointed. Quality neighborhood schools are lacking, the limited number of out-of-bounds (OOB) lottery spots may be taken by siblings, there are 17,000 kids on charter school wait lists this year, and tuition at the top private schools range from $20,000-$30,000 a year.

#3 - You may have lucked out and landed a spot at a great OOB school or charter school. What if the school ends at 5th grade - what are your options for middle school and high school? What if your other children don't benefit from the sibling preference (sibling lotteries are becoming a norm)?

#2 - Why are the favorable DCPS schools in Wards 3, 4, and 6? It's because these communities participate in the process. They attend meetings, they send letters, they hold the system and its educators accountable, they support school activities, and they raise money for additional resources. Ward 6 has recently transformed its public schools by paying attention and getting involved. We have the same community capital and we need to use it.

#1 - What is lacking at your neighborhood school that precludes you from enrolling or is causing you to consider leaving? Tell DCPS. If you don't articulate your wants and needs, someone else will define them for you.

Come hear what DCPS has to say about its vision for Ward 5 schools and ask the questions that matter. Show Councilman McDuffie and Chancellor Henderson that education is important to our community and that our interests must be considered in the decision making process.

DCPS is particularly hoping to hear from prospective parents (young families, OOB parents, and charter parents) who are interested in learning more about DCPS and providing input/suggestions. Please cross post and forward this email to your respective community and school list serves to encourage attendance!

Hope to see you there :)

Best,

Tara
