Wanna Stop Flooding ... Stop Cutting Down Trees!
New trees are a good thing ... but ... they are no replacement for the removal of mature, old growth trees that are being cut down here in Ward 5. Each of these fully grown trees sequesters 65,000 gallons of rainwater ... the CUA project removed 100 such trees (or, is in process of doing so) Do you know what that means? It means 6.5 million gals. of rain water (commonly called FLOODING) that will make itself into your basements, overflow the sewer treatment plant and let then, there's the paving over of porous green space that prevents water from being absorbed by the earth. Can you understand NOW why we are having all this flooding? Where is the community leadership? Where are the ANC's in this? AND ... finally, why does our Council Member not know this?
Here's one answer. Bury the power and phone lines! Stop butchering the trees (trimming is one thing) the inexperienced cheap labor being hired by the contractors have no idea how to trim a tree without damaging it. Here's another prevent builders and contractors from wholesale cutting of trees .. they clean our crappy aid and the protect us from flooding. Who is going to act on this. Who will even comment except for Daniel Wolkoff ... artisan, and friend of all green things.

Many residents have noticed newly planted city trees in the public space
in
front of their homes or businesses. Some like them; some do not. Here
are
a few helpful reminders from DDOT/Urban Forestry about these city trees
in
public space. <http://ddot.dc.gov/DC/DDOT/Services/Tree+Services>
1) PERMITS REQUIRED: CITIZENS MUST FIRST RECEIVE A DDOT-ISSUED
PERMIT TO PRUNE, CUT, REMOVE THE CITY'S PUBLIC SPACE TREES
+Permit>
Permit
Public Space Tree Permit "Anyone, whether resident or contractor, who
plants, prunes or removes a public street tree within the Public
Right-of-Way must first obtain permission from the Department of
Transportation's Urban Forestry Administration (UFA).
Anyone, whether resident or contractor, who plants, prunes or removes a
public street tree within the Public Right-of-Way must first obtain
permission from the Department of Transportation's Urban Forestry
Administration (UFA).
1. Submit your permit request through the
Transportation Online Permitting System (TOPS) on the web or go to the
Public Space Permit Office and use one of the kiosks located in the hall
on
the second floor adjacent to the permit office, which is located at:
District Department of Transportation
Planning Policy and Sustainability Administration
Public Space Permit Branch

Washington, DC 20024
Hours:
8:30 am to 4:15 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
9:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday
2. Once UFA has received notice of the permit application, it is
assigned to the appropriate arborist who will review submitted site plans
and other materials and may schedule a site visit to verify the extent of
the type of work requested.
3. The assigned arborist will make the necessary decisions regarding
the application.
Note: The Urban Forestry Administration reserves the right to deny any
and
all public space permits that relate to or impact public trees.
Please be aware of the following permitting requirements:
* All pruning of public trees should follow current ISA ANSI
Z133.1
Safety Standards for Pruning. See related documents below, courtesy of
<http://www.isa-arbor.com/> www.isa-arbor.com.
* Installing electrical conduits, outlets, and/or junction boxes
within tree box spaces is not permitted by UFA due to negative impacts on
tree health, public safety, and long term tree removal and tree
replacement
issues. Installing electrical systems requires a Public Space 'electrical
wiring' permit (available through the Permits Office kiosk) and is
subject
to UFA review and discretion.
* Public Space Permits will require a traffic control plan.
ATTENTION: BEFORE ANY DIGGING OCCURS, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE APPROPRIATE
ACTIONS TO AVOID INJURY OR UTILITY CONFLICTS. CALL MISS UTILITY AT (800)
257-7777 BEFORE ANY EXCAVATION.

The Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) is on-call 24 hours every day to
respond to emergencies associated with fallen trees and limbs that land
on
vehicles, sidewalks, and roadways.
If there is no immediate threat to individuals, vehicles parked in a
public
right-of-way, or the flow of traffic through streets and alleys, it is
not
an emergency and will be addressed in a timely manner according to the
Routine Maintenance schedule below.
Routine Maintenance Requests - Inspection within 30 days
UFA's primary mission is to plant and maintain the city's street trees.
Street trees are those located between the curb and sidewalk. UFA also
clears fallen trees and limbs from roadways and sidewalks, and moves or
removes fallen trees or limbs that impede vehicular passage through
alleys.
UFA does not conduct work on private property trees, nor does it maintain
