[WardFive] Events coming up: Powermeter 100, DC Capital Pride...

On June 4, 1919, Congress passed a joint Resolution that stated “the rights of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged …on the account of sex.” This followed with the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.  Tomorrow will mark the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the landing operations on June 6, 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II, which as 100 Year old World War II Veteran Sidney Walton said “killed Hitler” (see video below).

In June we also celebrate Immigrant Heritage month and Pride month.

Last week, I joined our city’s leadership in announcing that for the first time in more than 25 years DC Statehood will have a hearing in the US House of Representatives.  The hearing is scheduled in the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Chaired by Representative Elijah Cummings, on July 24th, 2019.  I hope many of you will save this date and join me and many others at this hearing.

Tonight, it is a night of celebration and recognition.   I thank the organizers of the Powermeter 100 at the newspaper, El Tiempo Latino, who will recognize individuals who make a difference in the Latino community in the region, and included me on that list.  Congratulations to all 100 of tonight’s honorees.

Lastly, I am pleased to announce that last month’s DC Statehood Short Film Festival at the Heritage Institution was a big success.  I want to Congratulate all that attended and participated in the film contest.  Congratulations to Frank Barr in getting the top honor with his film BE FREE (see link below).

Please watch a few interesting videos that the summer interns are helping put together:

Please join me at some of the events below!

Sincerely,

Franklin Garcia
