News and updates from Pepco

Winter 2019

In This Issue:

* Avoid scams
* Improving service reliability
* Mylar balloon safety
* Helping our customers in need

Pepco reminds customers on tips to avoid scammers

Pepco has seen an increase in potential scammers calling Pepco customers and falsely claiming their electric or gas service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information.

[scam phone]

Pepco representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call Pepco's Customer Service line at (202) 833-7500.

Customers in D.C. experience improvements in service reliability

Pepco customers in the District of Columbia experienced the fastest restoration times ever, as well as some of the lowest number of electric outages, on average, in the company's history in 2018. During the past five years, the frequency of service interruptions for customers also have decreased 23 percent in the District of Columbia. During the same time, customers in the District were restored 44 minutes faster, on average.

Message on mylar balloon safety

Pepco wants to remind the community of safety concerns regarding mylar balloons. Foil coating found on shiny balloons can cause preventable power outages and possible injury. When these balloons meet power lines or electrical equipment, their metallic properties can cause a surge of electricity that disrupts power and damages equipment.

[balloons]

In fact, untethered balloons cause hundreds of unnecessary service interruptions for our customers each year

Pepco assists furloughed workers during Federal Government Shutdown

Pepco's Customer Advocate team was pleased to be able to provide energy assistance information to customers who received a meal at the pop-up kitchen and café opened by Celebrity Chef José Andrés, and his non-profit organization World Central Kitchen, to feed federal workers and their families during the government shutdown.

Pepco employee resource groups also volunteered their time to provide food to furloughed workers in need. Pepco employee resource groups volunteered their time as well – assisting in providing food to furloughed workers in need. Pepco also provided a $50,000 matching grant to the United Way of the National Capital Area's Emergency Assistance Fund, aiding United Way NCA in serving all of those affected at their regional network of Financial Empowerment Centers (FEC) for individual financial counseling and guidance.

Lyrics below:

We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow

The hammer of the gods

W'ell drive our ships to new lands

To fight the horde, and sing and cry

Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar

Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah-ah, ah!

Ah-ah, ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow

How soft your fields so green

Can whisper tales of gore

Of how we calmed the tides of war

We are your overlords

On we sweep with threshing oar

Our only goal will be the western shore

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins

For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

I listened to the Zepplin song WHILE ALSO reading the blog. Now, I need a hot tea to warm me up again. :) Come from the land of the ice and snow.....

(But, seriously, thanks for reminding me about that great song - it's been a few decades since I listened to it over and over - from the vinyl. Still has magic.)

Hey all,

The happiest time of the year is upon us, can't you tell? It's a high of 27, there's a wind chill of really cold, and the river is higher than it should be. Today please try to arrive earlier between 4-5. Those that arrive before 4:30 will probably go down and around Offut Island, those that arrive after 4:30 will head straight up dead cow, but we will confirm that workout with Ashley in the parking lot at Anglers.

This year I will be at the Anglers beach, doing a warm up while we wait for a group and instructor to form. Once we have a group form with an instructor we will send you out on the workout. We will be meeting at 6 in the big eddy between Maryland and Center Chute to race from there down to Anglers Beach.

For those that need a little more motivation I have been listening to "Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin on repeat all day. If that isn't your cup of motivation tea, then you may want to read this blog I wrote last year to understand way we do it.

Don't forget about Fish Taco afterward. We can all warm up together.

PADDLE EVERYWHERE!
