I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Dolores Huerta. A true national treasure, Ms. Huerta was a tireless champion for justice and a powerful voice for the voiceless.

 

Here in the nation’s capital, we will always remember her deep commitment to voting rights and DC Statehood. A few years ago, I had the distinct honor of recording a bilingual public service announcement with her to promote our statehood movement (https://youtu.be/y8AIYWqssBI?si=AoRyjukvSi2K8Trv). During the shoot, she reminded everyone in the room that her fight for DC Statehood actually began in the 1960s. To honor this lifelong dedication, DC Councilmember Anita Bonds presented her with an official DC Council Resolution recognizing her decades of activism.

 

Ms. Huerta’s impact as a civil and human rights leader reached far beyond our city, inspiring people across the United States and around the globe. Her monumental contributions were recognized by Presidents Clinton and Obama, who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As the visionary who coined the powerful phrase “Sí, se puede” (Yes, we can), her life and legacy have been captured in numerous films, including the acclaimed 2017 documentary Dolores.

 

We will miss Ms. Huerta dearly. May she rest in peace and power.
