Re: [concerned4DCPS] Fwd: [ward5] Re: [WardFive] Join the conversation on improving Ward 5 schools (IFF closure recommendations), Tuesday at 6pm at Providence Hospital

Great model to reference Eric.  How about our city doing just that for our ENTIRE population and stop getting rid of our children's future.  Imaginge what our "amenity" packages are worth when we give away our air rights to developers.  This is Probably Just about Money for a lot of the Charter School Operators and not really about Education.  Our Leaders are failing in Education so they are bringing in those who have Money/Power behind them.

I am willing to Bet that We have People RIGHT HERE in the DISTRICT that would be great at operation of Charter Schools if that was the direction of Decisions.  We don't have to bring in a Company from Califonia or the North Pole.  Come on everybody - DCPS and CM's needs to be straight with us and incorporate us as part of their planning and stop treating us like we are "Scarecrows".  This is not the Wizard of Oz - Lots of our 600,000+ people have brains.

We have enough retired teachers who would love to be part - just for starters!!  The resources are right here laying dormant amongst us but of course, from my interaction with DCPS, we don't know nothing!!

At first I thought about that as well but then I thought of what Mr. Crok (Founder of McDonald's) once said.

He said that the reason that his business is most successful because they are one of the beat real estate investors in the business. Because of smart decisions and long term planning they have been able to sustain. I just hope that the school (if successful) uses this as part of their teachings to show our future generations the importance of planning and stability.

Subject: Check out TOPP Petition - Turn Off Pepco Payment

Hi Gigi,

Please consider our petition to Turn Off Pepco Payments, at:

Our three-point plan urges the Council of DC to take a stand for DC residents and unleash actions of mass accountability on Pepco.  We know the story.

Between 2005 and 2010 electric prices doubled. Pepco deferred maintenance, fired staff, and abandoned customer service in favor of automation, while paying out hundreds of millions in dividends and showering top executives in seven figure salaries, stock options and golden parachutes.

The result? Our grid remains mired in the bottom quartile among US municipalities for reliability.  Pepco = Power Outages.

Councilmember Yvette Alexander's Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs held a hearing on Pepco's reliability and storm restoration in February of 2010 . . .

Pepco's reliability didn't improve in the US rankings, but the frequency, scope and duration of power outages got worse -- even when the weather is good. June 29's storm caused hundreds of thousands to lose power for a week or more. Pepco is now synonymous with power outages.

Alexander's Committee held another reliability and storm restoration hearing on July 13. Pepco insisted they could not have bettered their response . . . storms of such unprecedented violence are . . .

As a public utility, Pepco should appreciate how global warming and extreme weather events are related. Or support the creation of more locally-produced renewable energy. Nope. Pepco shot down a 2011 shareholder resolution in support of a policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

If you can, please share this with friends and neighbors who don't want to keep going through these nightmares,

thank you for listening,

Robert Robinson

[WardFive] Found Orange Male Kitten with Collar on Owen

Found an orange male kitten with collar stuck in a tree on Owen PL between Montello and West Virginia ave tonight at about 9pm.  We were able to get him down and we're keeping him in a spare room for now.  The kitten has a collar that's a brownish color with three white stripes that go all the way around.

He's super friendly, kind of hates being alone, and purrs like an engine.

He definitely belongs to someone, and I'd love to get him back to them.  We can keep him for just a couple days and then either will have to see if someone else wants to take him or we'll have to take him to the shelter.

We made a craigslist post with photos here: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/laf/3178212081.html

[WardFive] Monthly HHW/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding, Sat., Aug 4 At Ft. Totten Transfer Station

Monthly HHW/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding, Sat., Aug 4 At Ft. Totten Transfer Station

Additional HHW/E-Cycling Drop Off, Thurs., August 2, 1-5pm

The Department of Public Works announced today its monthly Household Hazardous Waste/E-Cycling/Personal Document Shredding drop-off is Saturday, August 4, between 8 am and 3 pm at the Ft. Totten Transfer Station.  District residents may bring toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment.  Personal document shredding also is available and residents may bring up to five boxes of materials to be shredded.  No business or commercial material will be accepted.

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept household hazardous waste and e-cyclables only the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (August 2, from 1 pm to 5 pm).  While DPW normally offers personal document shredding the first Saturday, items for shredding cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives the first Saturday.

For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

Directions to Ft. Totten:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.

[WardFive] DPW To Collect Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, Thurs/Fri., Aug. 2 & 3 Due To High Temperatures

DPW To Collect Trash/Recycling Starting at 6 AM, Thurs/Fri., Aug. 2 & 3 Due To High Temperatures

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that its residential trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6 am, Thursday and Friday, August 2 and 3, due to predicted 90° and above temperatures and the effect of the 90° plus heat index.  Residents may put their trash and recyclables out for pick-up starting at 6:30 pm on the day before their collections to make sure these materials are collected.  Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day.

Throughout the summer, when the temperature and heat index are predicted to be 90˚ or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6 am to avoid health or environmental issues.
