[WardFive] Corrected Email for 5B02 - Thank you.

Greetings Ward 5!

Thank you Dr. Artisst for recognizing the error. I omitted FORMER in front of W5 First Lady. Mistakes do happen, thanks for your understanding.

It is with great appreciation, that I thank each and everyone of you that came out to support our 5B02 Family and Community Day at the Dwight Mosley Athletic Complex formerly Taft Recreation. Festivities were held on Saturday, July 26, 2014. All of the activities, food and beverages were donated by the community, 5B02 residents, and businesses. The young adults that frequent the athletic complex raised ALL of the monies for the sound equipment, and musical instruments. Original Facez and TOB donated their musical talents to entertain the community.

A "HEARTY" shout out to Muriel Bower's Campaign - Dion Townley, Vincent Orange, At-Large candidates Robert Smith, Carol Schwartz, and, our beloved Former W5 First Lady Romaine Thomas, ANC 5B Commissioners Carolyn Steptoe- 5B04, Michael Morrison- 5B03, and Jenese Jones- 5B05, for their support and attendance.

But without a doubt, this 2nd Annual 5B02 Family and Community Day belonged to the children! Space Jam Moon Bounce, LLC saved the day. The Jumbo sized moon bounce came with an internal basketball hoop and dual slide for children's enjoyment.

For the second year in a row, The Fifth District Metropolitan Police came out in full force to support and protect! The Fifth District Police Department's outreach branch, Fayette Vaughn-Lee provided Popcorn and Snow Cones for everyone. On such a hot day, what a refreshing treat. Thank you Lt Durand for also stopping by. Kudos to Commander Dierdre Porter for a fantastic team. Lt Glaze and Engine 17 stopped by to give support as well, thank you. Keep up the good work!!

The community also enjoyed the Department of Interior's, Bureau of Land Management's, Theresa Jefferson who intrigued the children with several animal skin displays, creating butterflies, bird watching, and storytelling. DC PTA's President Gwendolyn Griffin had goodie bags full of information for school aged children and their parents, and a book give away. Let's not forget the infamous - "Children's Corner"! The Children's Corner was the place to be for face painting, board games, building blocks, coloring, reading, and just a down right good time for the 1 - 10 year old.

For the sports lover in you, Mr. Simmeon Williams hosted four basketball tournaments for men ages 21 - 55 years. The basketball tournament brought men and women of all ages out to enjoy the games.

The Family and Community Day festival would not have been as successful without a fantastic committee. The Committee Members were Ms. Marian Thomas, Mr. Simmeon Williams, Sr., and Ms. Anisha Claggett. I appreciate each of you for your individual talents and combined commitment the 5B02 community.

[WardFive] LAYC's Foster Care and Unaccompanied Minors Program

Good Afternoon,

My name is Doreen Allen and I am the Family Resource Specialist at the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) located in Washington, DC.

LAYC is in great need of caring, committed and responsible adults to participate in our Foster Care and Unaccompanied Minor program. The United States is currently experiencing an unaccompanied minor crisis.  It is estimated that in 2014 an estimated 90,000 children will be apprehended by the US attempting to cross the US boarder, in addition in 2012, there was an estimated 399,546 children in foster care.

We are looking for Spanish and English speaking individuals who have space in their homes to care for children and youth, ages 0-21 years old who have been victims of abuse, neglect and or experience conditions that have force them to migrate.  Single adults or couples with or without children ALL qualify to participate. All of our children have been trauma-impacted.

These programs are designed to protect children and youth by giving them healthy and stable family life experiences for temporary periods of time. Our programs are also aimed at preserving the cultural identity of the child or young person by placing them in culturally sensitive homes, especially when there is a need for their native language to be spoken.

Program Requirements:

To become a Foster Parent you must…

·                   live in the District of Columbia;

·                   have at least one extra bedroom for a child

·                   speak either English or Spanish… or both!

·                   complete Police and Child Protective Services clearances for household members 18 years of age and older.

·                   get fingerprints for FBI clearances for household members 18 years of age and older

·                   obtain a fire inspection clearance

·                   participate in a 30-hour training program

·                   provide a culturally sensitive and supportive home environment

Foster parents gain…

1)          The satisfaction of helping a child in the community

2)          On-going training, support and supervision

3)          Financial support to cover the basic needs of a foster child placed in care

If you, or anyone you know, has space in their home and in their heart to help a child or teenager in your community, please contact Doreen Allen at 202.386-2623 or doreen@layc-dc.org.

Also, please feel free to forward this important announcement to other interested individuals or organizations.

Sincerely,

Doreen Allen

[WardFive] Judge: D.C. ban on handguns in public unconstitutional

“A case of a run-away federal judge?”

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/07/27/dc-gun-laws-second-amendment/13232157/

A federal judge Saturday overturned the District of Columbia's ban on carrying handguns in public on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.

"There is no longer any basis on which this court can conclude that the District of Columbia's total ban on the public carrying of ready-to-use handguns outside the home is constitutional under any level of scrutiny," said Judge Frederick J. Scullin Jr. in his ruling on Palmer v. District of Columbia.

"Therefore, the court finds that the District of Columbia's complete ban on the carrying of handguns in public is unconstitutional," he said.

The court ordered D.C. to cease enforcement of the ban for residents and non-residents alike.

The ruling, which could be appealed, is seen as a victory for proponents of gun rights and the Second Amendment.
