Re: [WardFive] Fw: Kick Racist Cops Out Our Community! Tell MPD To Fire Officer Altieri!

Call me ignorant but I see everything but the racist issue. I see the fear, hate and other issues. While I agree that the shirt is problematic, I want to be clear of the issues.

Thanks

Law4BlackLives-DC just started a petition to

Kick Racist Cops Out Our Community! Tell MPD To Fire Officer Altieri!

There is no room for racist cops in Black neighborhoods

Dear Theodora,

We just started a petition titled "Kick Racist Cops Out Our Community! Tell MPD To Fire Officer Altieri!"

On June 2, 5, and 13, 2017, Officer Vincent Altieri, Badge #4440, of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department, was seen in the DC community and at the DC Superior Court (where he was present to testify in a criminal case), wearing an offensive, racist, and threatening shirt. The shirt displays symbols of police harassment, hate, and death while prominently displaying the symbols and emblems of the Metropolitan Police Department. We're asking that you join with us, together we can voice our extreme concern about this offensive shirt and demand that the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Police Complaints take immediate disciplinary action against Officer Altieri and any other Officers who have worn this or similar shirts. We are also requesting proactive measures to address systemic abuses that led to the creation of a department environment that allowed this type of misconduct to go unchecked.

The Seventh District is a Black community being policed by an officer openly displaying white supremacist symbols!

The shirt displays a "sun cross," replacing the letter "O" of "PowerShift" with a notorious white supremacist symbol adopted by the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist hate groups. Immediately below is the image of the Grim Reaper, a personification of death in the form of a hooded skeleton, holding an assault rifle and a Metropolitan Police Department badge. Below, the shirt reads "Let me see that waistband jo," referring to "jump outs" and the routine practice of demanding to see the waistbands of individuals, who are disproportionately young Black and Brown men, often for no legitimate reason.

Given the prominent placement of MPD logos and a badge number, the shirt does not appear to be attributed to Officer Altieri alone, but instead, appears to have been designed for a group of officers associated with the MPD Seventh District. Ninety-five percent of the residents in MPD's Seventh District are black and too many Seventh District residents have experienced harassment and abuse at the hands of the police.

This shirt is offensive and indicates systemic bias in the policing of people of color. Join us to fight back.

White supremacy and insinuated threats of death should never be associated with or tolerated in police departments who are sworn to protect and serve. Such ideologies are dangerous and demonstrate a blatant disregard for Black and Brown life. They are at the root of rampant police abuse and result in the unconstitutional terrorizing of Black and Brown communities and the callous murder of Black and Brown men and women at the hands of the police, both in Washington, DC and across the country.

On behalf of a number of community organizations and community members, Law4BlackLives-DC has formally filed complaints with both the  Internal Affairs Division of the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Police Complaints regarding this shirt and the message it propagates. The shirt stands alone as an affront to the community. It also embraces ongoing patterns of constitutional violations, and constitutes a blatant disregard of MPD's own general orders, including MPD General Orders 110.11, 201.26, 304.10, and 304.15.

Such Officers are a threat to public safety and erode public trust in the police. Inaction by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Police Complaints would be an endorsement of this shirt's hateful message and an acceptance of a policing culture infected by racism and violence. Our effort are already having an effect, we're going to keep pushing until we win substantive change.

Will you pledge to join the fight against racist policing?

Thank you,

Law4BlackLives-DC

[WardFive] Statement on President Trump's Comments Endorsing Law Enforcement Police Officer Brutality

Statement on President Trump's Comments Endorsing Law Enforcement Police Officer Brutality

“When you see these towns and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, and I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice.” “Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over, like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody, don’t hit their head, I said, ‘You can take the hand away, OK?’” – President Donald Trump

During an appearance before an assembly of law enforcement officers yesterday, Friday, July 28, 2017, President Trump condone police officer brutality upon people they encounter in the exercise of their official duties.

President Trump’s comments are offensive, dangerous, reckless and should be roundly condemned.

As Chairman Emeritus of the 5th District Citizen’s Advisory Council and member of Chief’s Chief Citizen’s Advisory Council, I respect and honor the sacrifice of law enforcement officers who place themselves in danger to protect residents and visitors of the District of Columbia.

The history of discriminatory and racist law enforcement in the District of Columbia is not too far in the distant past to be forgotten.  As an African American male growing up in the District of Columbia I can bear witness to law enforcement misconduct.  Today, I applaud the efforts of our local officials and community members who have worked hard and valiantly together to build trust between District citizens and the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).  Community policing works and helps to promote citizen confidence in law enforcement and judicial due process.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2012, MPD and District residents will come together in solidarity with Americans across the country for a “National Night Out.” I urge all District residents and officers to remain committed to the principles of human dignity and respect for every person.

Potomac River Access

Adventure is not in the guidebooks and beauty is not on the maps.
Dear Friends and Families of Calleva and the Riley's Lock area of the Potomac River,
As many of you have seen in the news on televisions, papers, and on-line; there is a proposed shore to shore Security Zone being implemented on the Potomac River outside of the Trump National Golf Course. This has the potential of having a very big impact on all river users that put in down near Calleva at Rileys Lock on the C&O Canal and the Seneca Creek. This area is considered one of the four most popular paddling spots along the Potomac River and also happens to be where Calleva is headquartered and home to many of our instructional camps and programs. On the days when the Security Zone is in effect, Calleva would be forced to relocate all of our Island Day Campers, and a good portion of our sailing, SUP, canoeing, inflatable, and kayaking camps as well.
Of course we would not be the only group impacted by this Security Zone. There are numerous other camps and organizations that come visit this location each day, and during the weekends Calleva and other outfitters teach river (kayaking) classes for kids as well as adults. One particular group that we are involved with is Team River Runner (https://www.teamriverrunner.org), and every Sunday they run their adaptive paddling to help heal our nation's veterans. This location is ideal for them because of the easy access to the river, and the perfect river features to build skill and confidence. Beyond the multiple groups that depend on this area, there are an equal amount of other recreational boaters that come to the river to fish, waterski, bird watch, powerboat, and enter the waterway to take advantage of this tremendous resource with friends and family.  Please help keep this section of the Potomac River open to the Public.
Calleva understands and supports a reasonable Security Zone. In this area, the Potomac River is thousands of feet across and paddling channels and lanes can be clearly marked and patrolled. There are at least a half dozen other options that can be implemented that would not permanently close this section of River.
Please help us by showing your support to keep our Nation's River free and accessible. You can submit a comment here:  http://www.regulations.gov
Make sure you copy this docket number to search for this regulation:  USCG–2017–0448
We have until Aug 9th, to help shape the outcome of this Interim. If you have any questions regarding this Interim Rule, please submit questions to:
Mr. Ronald Houck. 410-576-2674 or email: Ronald.L.Houck@uscg.mil

[WardFive] Parent roundtables on the state of childcare in DC!

Hello  Community Members

Right now, the cost of childcare in the District of Columbia is higher than anywhere else in the entire country. Yes, you read that right! Let's work together to change that!

MomsRising.org is partnering with the Universal ChildCare Now D.C. Coalition to make sure D.C. families get the 411 on upcoming childcare legislation and make sure we hear from families like yours on how child care is impacting your family.

We'll also be decorating onesies with messages to be delivered to City Council Members. So let's make it a playdate! Tell us what you think in person — and bring your children. We'll have food, juice boxes, kid-friendly space, and lots to talk about.

Play dates will be held throughout the city. Click here to select one of multiple dates-http://action.momsrising.org/survey/DC_Childcare/.
