[WardFive] Councilmember McDuffie statement on the passing of Lillian Huff

Washington, D.C. – Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (Ward 5) issued the following statement upon the passing of Lillian Huff:

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ms. Lillian Huff. Through her many roles in the District of Columbia, she helped to establish political institutions that continue to impact our discourse today. She was a civil rights advocate who opened doors for African Americans and women, while also advancing the cause of self-determination for the District of Columbia on a national stage.

Among her many accomplishments, Ms. Huff was the first and only D.C. Statehood Constitutional Convention Chair; she was one of the founders of the National Federation of Democratic Women; she twice served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention; she played an

instrumental role in establishment of what is now known as the D.C. State Democratic Committee; and she advanced the cause of civil rights at the Democratic National Committee by securing membership for representatives of the National Federation of Democratic Women.

Her spirit, wisdom, and passion will be missed in Ward 5 and throughout the District of Columbia, but her legacy will continue to grow after a lifetime of service.

I offer my prayers and sympathies to her family, close friends, and all who were touched by her work."
