[WardFive] DC Delegation Travels to Europe Seeking Support for DC Statehood

DC Delegation Attends 14th General Assembly of UNPO (Unrepresented Nations & Peoples Organization), and Conference on Unrepresented Women’s rights at UN’s 39th Human Rights Council

Last week a delegation from the District of Columbia traveled to Europe to advocate for DC Statehood in international forums.  The Delegation was headed by DC’s Shadow Senator Paul Strauss and DC’s Shadow Representative Franklin Garcia.  The delegation visited Geneva, Switzerland, where the United Nation’s 39th Human Rights Council is meeting, and Savoy, France, where UNPO held its 14th General Assembly.  The advocacy in Europe concluded with a visit to the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, where the DC flag “No Taxation Without Representation” was displayed.   The Advocacy is part of an effort to bring international attention to DC’s lack of Congressional voting representation, and DC Statehood.

This year, other notable international outreach included, contacts with the Organization of American State (OAS) Secretary Luis Almagro, Dominican President Danilo Medina, and Mexico’s MORENA (ruling party) President Yeidckol Polevnsky Gurwitz.

Recently, a member of the European Parliament made a case for DC Statehood, and urged the body to call out the disenfranchisement during a parliamentary session (https://www.nbcwashington.com/blogs/first-read-dmv/Member-of-European-Parliament-Backs-DC-Statehood-493333521.html).

Washington DC is home to more than 700,000 residents who pay federal taxes, but have no voting representation in the U.S. Congress.
