[WardFive] DC Snow Team to Treat Roads

DC Snow Team to Treat Roads Ahead of Tonight's Snow, Rain Mix

Good afternoon, District Residents:

With the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasting a mix of snow and ice this evening, with a likely accumulation of one inch in the District, Mayor Bowser has deployed the DC Snow Team to begin pretreatment of roads at 10 am with 39 trucks. At 12 pm, 169 additional plows will begin treating other roads throughout the District. The DC Snow Team's full deployment will continue overnight and through the Friday morning commute. Residents and motorists can register to receive important weather alerts from the District on their devices by signing up for AlertDC at alertdc.dc.gov.

The DC Snow Team encourages residents and commercial property owners to apply abrasives such as rock salt, de-icer, or non-clumping kitty litter to the sidewalks around their properties to reduce the possibility of icing and to prevent slips and falls.

Mayor Bowser is committed to a quick completion of plowing and salting along major roads and residential streets, which in turn means a faster return to normal traffic flow and earlier resumption of trash collection and other city services. To report any concerns, residents should call the Citywide Call Center by dialing 311.

This week, DPW has missed trash and recycling collections in some areas of the city due to recent inclement weather.  This snow event left many District alleyways difficult for trash and recycling trucks to safely traverse. We have asked residents to leave their trash and recycling at their usual point of collection and we will collect by this weekend, wherever possible. DPW will not be issuing sanitation tickets to those residents whose regular collection has been missed.

Because of today's snow deployment, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will not be collecting Christmas trees and holiday greenery today. The equipment used for these collections will be used as part of the DC Snow Team deployment.

For more information about DC's snow program and preparing for winter weather, or to see where District Snow Team plows are working, go to snow.dc.gov. Ongoing updates are also posted on the social media accounts of the Department of Public Works (DPW): FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.
