January 7, 2019

Greetings!

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) invites you and your organization to attend our 93
rd Annual Black History Luncheon.  ASALH was founded by Dr. Carter D. Woodson who always emphasized the crucial link between knowledge and racial harmony and is remembered today as the " Father of Black History".

This exciting event, which celebrates and recognizes the central role of African Americans in U.S. history, will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Washington Renaissance Hotel, 999 Ninth Street NW, Washington, DC. On this occasion, ASALH will formally announce the 2019 national Black history theme, "Black Migrations."

Jelani Cobb, the Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism at Columbia University will moderate our distinguished panel consisting of Gloria Browne-Marshall, Professor of Constitutional Law, John Jay College of Criminal Justice CUNY, Derek Musgrove Associate Professor of History, University of Maryland Baltimore County and Kojo Nnamdi, Radio Host of "The Kojo Nnamdi Show" and "The Politics Hour" on WAMU.  In addition, guests and those who have been named as Living Legacies will be recognized and the 2019 Black Heritage postage stamp will also be on display.

The luncheon, the largest Black History Month celebration in the DMV, attracts over 1,000 historians, history makers, members of the military, policymakers, students and supporters from communities throughout the DC metropolitan area and beyond.

We are inviting you to purchase a $1,500 Gold Table for 10 in support of this significant event.  Gold table purchasers are listed in the printed luncheon program and receive reserved seating.   Other opportunities to support ASALH for the Black History luncheon are the purchase of a full ($1,000) or half page ($500) ad in the printed luncheon program, or providing  a tax-deductible contribution of any amount.  Details about tables, tickets and ads can be found at the following link: https://asalh.org/annual-black-history-luncheon/

The luncheon will also keep with its tradition of hosting the pre-luncheon Featured Authors' Event from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  In addition this year, we will host a private event which will highlight the book "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Politics."  As a special incentive, your guests who purchase tickets by February 1, 2019 will gain exclusive access to this event with authors Donna Brazile, Yolanda Caraway and Minyou Moore.

We hope you will consider joining us.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Cyrus

Executive Director
