[WardFive] Fwd: Empower DC - Education Campaign - State of the District address and important dates

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Daniel  del Pielago" <daniel@empowerdc.org>
Date: February 2, 2013, 12:50:13 PM EST
Subject: Empower DC - Education Campaign - State of the District address and important dates

Hello all,

On Tuesday February 5th Mayor Gray will be giving his State of the District Address.  Many District students, parents and community members are concerned that the current "state of the district" includes 15 public schools which are slated to close.  This is not the type of city we want to live in.

Join us to raise our voice to let the mayor now that we do not want our Public Schools closed and that we need a moratorium on all school closures.   Here are the details:

  • Tuesday – February 5th – Mayor Gray's State of the District - 6th and I Historic Synagogue (600 I St NW) -  The State of the District begins at 7:00pm and we will be there at 6:00pm with signs, chants and leaflets to hand out.  If you are able to join us please contact me at 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email.

  • Legal route to block school closures – As many of you know we will be taking a legal route to block this cycle of unjust/discriminatory school closures in our city.  We are in the process of identifying Parents who are interested in being part of this legal suit.  If you have a child/children at one of the schools slated to close or know someone who is faced with a school closure.  Please let them know that we want to talk with them – I can be reached at 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email at Daniel@empowerdc.org  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Below is the schedule for the upcoming oversight and budget hearings.  Thank you Mary Levy for putting together this list of the Education oriented hearings:

To sign up to testify call Brendan Williams-Kief at 724-8061, or e-mail bwilliamskief@dccouncil.us

Persons wishing to testify are encouraged, but not required, to submit written testimony in advance of each hearing to Nyasha Smith, Secretary to the Council of the District of Columbia; Suite 5; John A. Wilson Building; 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.; Washington, DC 20004. If a written statement cannot be provided prior to the day of the hearing, please have at least 20 copies of your written statement available on the day of the hearing for immediate distribution to the Council.

Going Away Celebration for Douglass Statue Moving to Capitol, Monday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the city's send-off celebration of the move of the District of Columbia's Frederick Douglass statue to the U.S. Capitol, Steven Weitzman, who created the statue, will offer a rare glimpse of how a major work is created, and John Muller, the author of the book Frederick Douglass in Washington: The Lion of Anacostia, will speak about Douglass's little known but deep commitment to the rights of D.C. citizens.  Mayor Vincent Grayand Council Chair Phil Mendelson will also help celebrate the enactment of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton's (D-DC) bill to place the first-ever D.C. statue in the Capitol.  The celebration will take place on Monday, February 4, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.in the lobby of One Judiciary Square (441 4th Street NW), where the statue is currently displayed.
Douglass was known as an abolitionist and an international human rights champion, but he was also a great fighter for equal citizenship for D.C. residents in particular, and served as Recorder of Deeds and U.S. Marshal here.  Norton has asked that the official ceremony to receive the D.C. statue in the Capitol be held this month, Black History Month, but that may not be possible.  Norton said, "Monday's ceremony will celebrate not only Frederick Douglass the storied Black History Month figure, but also Douglass the Washingtonian and the preeminent fighter for D.C. rights."  The D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, through a public process, choose to depict Frederick Douglass in a statue because of his work and contributions to the District of Columbia in particular.

[WardFive] Learn about the New Health Care Law (ACA) and What It Means for You!!! - Join Us for the DC Health Benefit Exchange (HBX) and Health Care Reform Communications Summit - Tuesday, February 12, 2013

DC Health Benefit Exchange (HBX) and Health Care Reform

Communications Summit

January 23, 2013

Dear Community Stakeholders,

The DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority (HBX) will host the “HBX and Health Care Reform Communications Summit,” on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, from 1:00 am to 4:30 pm.  The Summit will be held at the Mt. Vernon Place Conference Center (Mt. Vernon  Place United Methodist Church) located at 900 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20002 near the Mt. Vernon Square - 7th Street Convention Center Metro station.

The Communications Summit is designed to begin  marshaling the resources of DC government agencies, industry partners and community stakeholders in developing strategies to reach DC residents with consistent and effective messages about their new rights and responsibilities in enrolling in high-quality, affordable health plans through the District’s Health Benefit Exchange and Medicaid.  Enrollment in the DC Exchange begins October 1, 2013 with coverage starting January 1, 2014.

At the Summit, the newly appointed HBX Executive Director, Mila Kofman, will provide an overview of the Affordable Care Act and give an update on the District’s progress towards developing and implementing the Exchange.  Other nationally recognized experts, along with local leaders, will also participate in the Summit.

The specific Summit objectives are:

  • To discuss and identify strategies to reach DC residents with information about their rights and responsibilities in obtaining health coverage through the Health Benefit Exchange and about changes to Medicaid and other public programs
  • To identify how stakeholders can help us reach our diverse communities
  • To identify ways government agencies can work together with community stakeholders to achieve the critical goals of the Exchange - enrollment of all eligible residents in high-quality, affordable coverage.

Why Attend?

Input from stakeholders is an important component towards the success of implementing the District’s Health Benefit Exchange.  It is vitally important that your organization is represented at the Summit to learn firsthand about the progress being made toward the development and implementation of the Exchange and about Medicaid changes under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In addition to learning about the Exchange, you will have the opportunity to fully understand how the new health insurance law will impact and ultimately benefit you and the people you serve as we approach the October 1, 2013 enrollment date.

As leaders in the community, you can help us with identifying effective strategies to best communicate messages to your constituents about health reform, enrollment in Quality Health Plans and the expanded Medicaid services.

Summit Format

Formatted in two sessions, the Summit will not only address messaging and strategies from a consumer perspective, it will also allow for small group discussions on the role of key stakeholders, like yourself, in educating District residents about health reform and the Exchange.  Presentations will include an overview of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), changes to Medicaid, and access to the Exchange.

While the morning session is designed for District Government agency staff involved in health care, the afternoon session is expressly designed for our community stakeholders and partners who will work with us to explore how best to communicate health reform and enrollment messages to the District’s diverse audiences.

Registration

Ø  To register for the Summit by February 8, 2013, please click here.

Register early. Seating is limited.

Ø  So that we might appropriately prepare for your attendance at the Summit, we want to hear from you ahead of time!  Please complete the short, Pre-Summit Survey by February 4, 2013.

Thank you for your continued support.   Should you have any questions or need additional information, please visit the HBX website, www.dchbx.com.

We look forward to seeing on February 12, 2013.

Sincerely,
