Subject: Empower DC - Education Campaign - State of the District address and important dates

Hello all,

On Tuesday February 5th Mayor Gray will be giving his State of the District Address.  Many District students, parents and community members are concerned that the current "state of the district" includes 15 public schools which are slated to close.  This is not the type of city we want to live in.

Join us to raise our voice to let the mayor now that we do not want our Public Schools closed and that we need a moratorium on all school closures.   Here are the details:

  • Tuesday – February 5th – Mayor Gray's State of the District - 6th and I Historic Synagogue (600 I St NW) -  The State of the District begins at 7:00pm and we will be there at 6:00pm with signs, chants and leaflets to hand out.  If you are able to join us please contact me at 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email.

  • Legal route to block school closures – As many of you know we will be taking a legal route to block this cycle of unjust/discriminatory school closures in our city.  We are in the process of identifying Parents who are interested in being part of this legal suit.  If you have a child/children at one of the schools slated to close or know someone who is faced with a school closure.  Please let them know that we want to talk with them – I can be reached at 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email at Daniel@empowerdc.org  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Below is the schedule for the upcoming oversight and budget hearings.  Thank you Mary Levy for putting together this list of the Education oriented hearings:
