[WardFive] REMINDER Rally to Protect the Voting Rights Act!

CALL TO ACTION

ON FEBRUARY 27TH THE U.S. SUPREME COURT WILL HEAR

SHELBY COUNTY V. HOLDER, WHICH CHALLENGES THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF SECTION 5
OF THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT.

Rally to Protect the Voting Rights Act!

Join civil rights leaders, Members of Congress, activists, students and
advocates from all over the country at the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court
during oral argument in Shelby County v. Holder.

Wednesday, February 27

9am - 1pm Facts:

Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) requires jurisdictions with a
history of voting discrimination to receive preapproval from the Justice
Department or a federal district court in D.C. for any voting change to
ensure such changes do not discriminate against voters who are racial,
ethnic or language minorities. In 2006, an overwhelmingly bipartisan
majority of Congress reauthorized the VRA for 25 more years.

What's at Stake: Voting discrimination continues to persist, and it
undermines our democracy. The VRA plays a critical role in preventing and
addressing real threats to Americans' right to vote. And Section 5 is a
proven tool for protecting voting rights in places with the most egregious
history of voter disenfranchisement.
