Washington, DC has a strong community of veterans who bring unique talents with their combination of skills, knowledge, and commitment to the community and the country.

On Wednesday, July 19, 2017, the DC Department of Human Resources will sponsor, in partnership with the DC National Guard and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, a DC Veterans Hiring #DCHIRESVETS event.

This event will offer veterans the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops, connect with District and federal agencies as well as private sector companies.

Participating agencies and companies will conduct interviews and have the opportunity to make contingent job offers on the spot.

Who: All veterans are invited to attend. This event is restricted to veterans only.

What: ”DC Hires Vets” will offer veterans the opportunity to apply and be interviewed for positions with the District of Columbia government and private sector corporations. Further, veterans can meet directly with District agencies and those Federal agencies that provide services to veterans.

[WardFive] Trash, Recycling Collections Begin at 6am, Remainder of Week

Trash, Recycling Collections Will Begin at 6am Wednesday, July 19—Friday, July 21 Due to Predicted 90°+ Temperatures

The forecast calls for 90°+ temperatures in the District for the remainder of the week; therefore, DC Department of Public Works (DPW) trash and recycling crews will begin their collections an hour earlier, at 6am Wednesday, July 19 through Friday, July 21.

To make sure trash and recycling are out for pick-up at the earlier time, DPW's customers can put their items out starting at 6:30pm this evening, rather than waiting until the morning of their collection day. Trash and recycling containers should be removed from public space by 8pm on the collection day.

Throughout the summer, when the temperature is predicted to be 90˚ or higher or the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments announces unhealthy air quality (Code Orange or Code Red days), DPW collection crews will begin their work at 6am to avoid health and environmental issues.

DPW provides essential city services in two distinct program areas: environmental services/solid waste management and parking enforcement. Both contribute to making District streets and public spaces clean, safe, attractive and accessible for all residents, businesses, commuters and visitors.

The Office of the Tenant Advocate will present Renters 101 training on Saturday, July 29, 2017from 12 Noon until 2:00 p.m. Renters 101 is designed to provide tenants in the District of Columbia with information on their rights and responsibilities. Topics will include leases, security deposits, how to handle housing code problems, landlord disclosures required by law, reasonable notice by landlord to enter property, evictions and quiet enjoyment. Tenants often have misinformation about landlord/tenant law in the District of Columbia. This is an excellent opportunity for tenants, housing advocates, agency representatives and elected officials to learn first-hand from a trained attorney advisor.

The session will be held at the Reeves Center, 2000 14th Street, NW in Suite 300N (corner of 14th and U Streets). The Reeves Center is accessible by public transportation. The nearest Metro Station is on the Green Line. Exit the African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo station on 13th Street. Bus routes include the 52, 53, 54, 90, 92, 93 and the Circulator.
