Mayor Bowser Announces Chief Service Officer

Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the appointment of Delano Hunter to serve as Chief Service Officer of Serve DC - The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism. Hunter, who previously served as the Interim Senior Deputy Director for Programs at the Department of Employment Services (DOES), will lead the Bowser Administration’s efforts to promote volunteerism and community service.  

“Delano is a proven leader with a real talent for improving agency operations and implementing effective strategies,” said Mayor Bowser. “Most importantly, he is passionate about mobilizing District volunteers to serve our community, so that more residents can find their pathways to the middle class.”

Serve DC is instrumental in numerous District-led volunteer activities, including:

·       The Resident Snow Team, a volunteer program that connects volunteers with elderly and disabled residents who need assistance shoveling walkways during the winter

·       Hands on Hearts CPR Program, an initiative to train 5,000 people in hands-only CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) by September 2016

·       The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service promoting service and civic engagement across the city

Hunter has worked in numerous roles in District government, including Deputy Director of Serve DC, Special Assistant at the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, and Interim Chief of Staff at DOES.  Prior to joining District government, he worked for Nike Inc. in Beaverton, Oregon as a member of the highly selective Retail Development Program. While in Oregon, Hunter co-founded the Nike Product Creation Experience (NPCE), which provides mentorship to inner-city youth while teaching the product creation process.

Hunter went on to serve as an organizer in the Brentwood community of Ward 5.  In this capacity, Hunter worked closely with residents on workforce development, truancy prevention, and community empowerment initiatives.

A native Washingtonian, Hunter was educated in District of Columbia public schools.  He graduated summa cum laude from Delaware State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.  Currently, Hunter is completing his Masters of Business Administration at Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business, and serves as president of the Gateway Community Association. He lives in Ward 5 with his wife and son.
