Dear All,
Wondering what to do with that $100 that's been burning a hole in your pocket? Feeling flush with your tax refund? How about a donation to Friends of the Cheat... consider it money saved on replacing the underside of your car from driving to the Cheat/LBS take-out. Please, head to the FOC Cheat Access page and click DONATE. Coastal Canoeists will match the first $1200 in donations; give over $100 and FOC will renew your membership or start a new one!

From Charlie Walbridge:
Cheat Access Update from Friends of the Cheat (FOC)
On Monday Friends of the Cheat (Board Member Charlie Walbridge and Staffer David Petry ) met with Joe Cline, local Department of Highways Manager. His crews are working on the worst spots on the Jenkinsburg Access Road THIS WEEK. Please do not pester Joe Cline and his crew. This problem goes beyond what he can do unless we get additional resources.
The rafting companies, paddling clubs, and private users of all interests want to see a solution to the larger, systemic funding challenges for roads like Bull Run Road (14/4). We are taking these concerns to the Governor's office as advised by Division of Tourism to release funds to work on the road. Many of you have written support letters to the Governor and local officials; if you haven't please do!

Monday Evening FOC Director Amanda Pitzer with support from American Whitewater and Cheat River Outfitters asked the Preston County Commission to support this request. We were well received, and they plan to support our request. Amanda got this email afterwards, which was also sent to Charleston:
Commissioner Dave Price wrote:
Hey folks...this is just a little heads-up of request that is coming your way. As you may know, the rafting business is pretty significant on the Cheat...this attraction is used extensively by the Morgantown/Preston CVB as a tourism attraction...the problem is the roads that lead to Bull Run area where the boats and people are taken out and transported back up to the beginning point.
The area can be accessed by two different roads...one from Masontown side ...and that is so bad they can't use it...the other is from Hudson road Valley Point...it's bad too but they have been doing fundraisers to do some improvements on the road. As representatives appeared before the Commissioners for a support letter Monday evening. There are some improvements that they can't do and the rafting companies say that with the road conditions that exist, they may not be able to do the Cheat excursions. It is RT 14/4 I think...but it's the Valley Point side.
The request and support letters will be coming soon and I just wanted to see if we could get an early start on some help. If you get a chance, ride down to the High bridge at Bull Run from either side. It's easy to see why the transport busses can't do the trip.
AND...Several water rescues/emergency calls to the area take place every year. Access is difficult if not impossible with a regular motor vehicle such as an ambulance unit.
Thanks a bunch for beginning some communication on this issue.
So help us raise Cheat/ Big Sandy Access money!
We know there will be more work to do, and your contributions help us maintain three access points on the Cheat (Albright and Rockville) and the Big Sandy (Rockville) as well as the road. If Highways finishes the Cheat Access road work we have a stretch of the road to Rockville that needs attention. Plus we are building a composting toilet at the upper Cheat Canyon Access - for obvious reasons! It's time to get our sh*t together, if you know what I mean!
Your support is vital. It's a big reason that those County Officials listened to us! Head to the FOC Cheat Access page and click DONATE. Coastal Canoeists will match the first $1200 in donations; give over $100 and we'll renew your FOC membership or start a new one!
