Bonds Proposes for Bicycles to be Tax Free Every Earth Day
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, April 19, At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds, Chairperson of the Committee on Housing and Community Development introduced legislation that would exempt taxes on bicycles and related gear purchased on April 22nd in celebration of Earth Day.
The "Earth Day Bicycling Tax Holiday Act of 2016" is to provide an annual sales tax holiday on bicycling related products such as bicycles, wheels, tires, locks, helmets, bicycling clothing including sneakers, bicycle accessories, bicycle parts, and other such items annually on each April 22nd in celebration of Earth Day.
"To celebrate Earth Day, we must encourage the public to adopt policies which will protect our environment to preserve our planet," stated Councilmember Bonds. Adding, "With a one-day tax exemption, this legislation will produce year-long benefits for the health of bicyclists, the District, and the world.
Biking has many environmental benefits. Biking significantly reduces transportation emissions, biking lessens traffic congestion, and biking reduces the need for petroleum. In contrast, motor vehicles produce more than 30% carbon dioxide emissions, more than 80% carbon monoxide emissions, and approximately 50% of the nation's nitrogen oxide emissions every year. Additionally, biking adds to the health and well-being of the cyclist.
Councilmember Bonds is joined on the legislation by co-introducers Councilmembers Cheh, Grosso, Nadeau, and Todd and co-sponsor Councilmember Orange.
