[WardFive] Update from China!

Master Jamar Lee with DCPS students in China.

A GREAT Day 2!

After visiting some of the great historical sites in Beijing on the first day of our stay, we left the city to visit perhaps China's most well-known landmark: the Great Wall. We took a bus to the Badaling section of the wall, perhaps the most famous stretch, as it was the first section to be opened to the general public and foreign tourists in the People's Republic of China. The journey along the wall was difficult at times, but definitely worth it for the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and countryside.

After lunch and a little souvenir shopping, we headed back to Beijing to visit Houdong, a historic neighborhood in Old Beijing. There we got to see another side of the city away from the large tourist sites. We took a rickshaw ride through the neighborhood and had the opportunity to eat a traditional dinner in the home of an elderly couple whose family had lived in the same house for five generations! They cooked a delicious meal for us and regaled us with stories about their amazing lives.

After that, we headed back to the hotel to rest before I first day in the rural community where we'll be doing our service project. We can't wait to get started!
