Re: [WardFive] W5 Residents Consider Future-Post Thomas

Hey Geoff,

Let me quote you  - "I don't follow this listserv closely. I delete almost everything that comes across from it without even reading, but I took the time to look at this one and I felt it was worth responding to".  I assume that statement was meant to let people know that you are innocent by being ignorant of the happenings in the Ward.

I know that you were reading all the time as I never mentioned that my father taught me Yoga at 3 years like you stated.  It is my daughter who I have mentioned in a few emails who is 3.  And the fact that her age stuck in your head also says that from a Pshychological perspective, you are holding on to something there that has you irritated; causing you to blend the "age 3" into your response to my father teaching me. So, while you may want to appear peaceful, you are internalizing lots by reading and not commenting; and it shows.

Furthermore, it shows that you are reading and following along quite well before deleting or at least you are following my writing. And this is what I try to tell some who are not as experienced regarding the dangers hidden inside the treeline - that slick double talk that wants everyone to believe that you are so "innocent" while I (and others) am/are so "angry".  Next time, use the word passionate, it suits me and my culture much better.

So you know, you are not the only one, others are also reading! And for the record, I don't have any "beef" with you and others on this list serve, but just having a discussion consisting of arguments opposing yours and the other positions which I passionately defend.  Really it is meant to enlighten those who choose to keep wearing blinders.

I hope that was peaceful enough for you.

Call me what you want fella but the reality is, I know a lot of people in this ward on this list serve that would differ with your analysis of me and better yet, would agree with what I write.  But then again, that seems to be a cultural response to me identifying issues and catching folks in their own double talk.  And, I don't think that everyone is out to get me. I have some great neighbors and friends in this Ward.

And Kathy Henderson is definitely not an Idiot - its just all about her most of the times and her few blocks in regards to crime and not the bigger picture (in my opinion).  One fact about her is that she is much more interested in helping her community than you and many others appear to be. And at least she is reading her community listserv.

With one foot in the grave and the other on a Banana peel, I am going to interject on the madness when it rears its head. The fact is that you responded to this one because you thought you had a chance to get one in with the request for some stupid study that common sense already figured out. So you should know, I watched your habits when you did write on this list serv so I know your thought process.  And in our culture, it is not called paranoid or delusional but habits of self preservation - being aware of everyone and everything in our surroundings.  That's why Yoda told Luke to close his eyes and feel the force - that's what my dad did - he taught me yoga and meditation as part of my daily functioning. I only wish I listened earlier.

I see you Geoff. Maybe, you should go back to "deleting" emails.  Yeah Right!!

I don't think you're an idiot. I think Kathy Henderson might be, but you just have really thin skin and think everyone's out to get you. That makes you paranoid, and maybe a bit delusional, but not an idiot.

I don't play aloof. I play "I don't have time to listen to some 'holier-than-thou' dude tell me about how he was doing yoga with his dad when he was 3."

I'm glad you found peace, but keep tilting at those windmills, Don. Sancho will be right there to help you, and I'm sure you'll slay one of those beasts someday.

There it is. I found Peace.  My daughter came into the room and I remember the peace that I am fighting for is her freedom.  Like I said Geoff, I don't have any beef with you and most on this list serv, but I/we have read your previous emails to know that you are not an idiot and you shouldn't talk to us like we are either.

To answer your last peace  comment being offensive, it really is. If you live in trinidad, stay over there. It is not your community/spiritual ambiance that they are screwing up. Speaking from experience, greed/chasing money isnt the solution.

And by the way - speaking frankly and what's on one's mind is being proactive as well as being honest with oneself is a definite in the meditation world.  Being able to look at oneself in the mirror coincides with being at peace. maybe you can on both but trust and believe that there are quite a few who cannot and needs to meditate.

Imagine - speaking up assertively and being strong and confident and not taking crap equates to not having peace. Sounds like a very cultural response/attack to me.

To all the rest of the people on this listerv - I have nothing against businesses on 12th Street. I have no idea where this guy pulled that from, but let me just categorically say that I have no idea what he's talking about.

Hello Geoff,

It is not that higher population density/disposable income means businesses in the neighborhood will close. It just means that when one builds facility like the ones along the Monroe street corridor (which I think most of us are looking forward to minus a few floors), it will attract away some of the current clientele from 12th Street.  There should have been some congruent planning for 12th Street that coincided with the Monroe Street corridor and the rest of developments coming to this area as 12th Street is a major pass through and an existing Shopping Area.  There is a definite divide being created with this "Little Rome" area

Now, even if businesses try to invest on 12th street, you will have some our wonderful "neighborly" protestors who will protest about parking when they have no cars or live 6 to 12 blocks away and many of you watch this occur.  Of course that's because there is "drug dealers", "prostitutes", "money laundering" and the rest of nonsense it takes to motivate a community against establishments.

Then if you defend yourself or a business, you get labelled "invective" and the boycott is in.  Along with Mr. Johnson, I probably do more than anyone else in this business community for this neighborhood - even before owning a property or a business on 12th Street. Maybe these new people moving in will be more diversely accepting and less controlling especially as moderators on our Brookland ListServ.  Or maybe, they will be young out of state "white/italian" graduates who are "masters" in their Original type business that we all roll out the red carpet.

Don't get me wrong, I support the young men at Menomale however it is quite strange that I haven't heard of any parking issues while they have ZERO parking spaces.  I saw so much support for 901 Monroe development which is going to have over 200 units plus a Block of retail, but very limited parking in comparison.  BUT OF COURSE - Bike Racks!!! Because we should all ride bikes or we are evil!  I just wish so many of you would see/admit to the lack of support for others who also live here.  At some point, you have to see the  __________   and  _____________  involved!!!  But that's the sacrifice that extends from one generation to another.  Imagine how much more time I would have with my daughter but instead, I have to deal with foolishness, egos and HATE!!

Hi Jerry/community,
There is only one huge problem here. I don't here anyone discussing a plan to keep 12th street alive when 901 and RI are completed. I am sure you have had some early discussions on this issue, but it needs to be broaden now rather than later. Have all the small business owners met and discuss the future of 12th street? There should be a strategy in place from RI to Michigan to support all the small businesses to continue to stay afloat. What is Office of Planning, d., and WMAT saying about this? Have all 3 of the ANCs written/adopted a resolution on the matter? Has the Small Area Plan for Brookland been updated to reflect the needs of the small business owners. In many of our neighborhoods development is planned, but there has not been a Small Areal Plan funded by the council to hear from the community. Not good.

I suggested to the Council that all Small Area Plans include a section for small businesses to be addressed in partnership with the community. This would be a proactive move to head off future issues with community/ANC. I would hope that all the ANCs adopt a resolution on this matter due to all the development projected in W5. I would love here someone speak on the Crowding/Density issues we will be facing. People just need to be educated about all the issues. It seems we have gone from one extreme to the other so quickly. No development/services, now a great deal in a short period of time.

Good piece ... it would have been more dramatic and provided more light if they mentioned our own Rob Ramson who had the courage and foresight to build a national class luxury B & B on 12th Street and then ... to support the opening of one of the city's most popular and trendy watering holes (with a vegan twist)  ... Ramson's establishment has added both class and quality to the Michigan Ave end of Brookland and provides the potential for a 12th Street resurgence.  Now if only someone would do the same thing at R.I. Ave.

As residents of a largely Northeast ward of the city prepare to elect a new member to the D.C. Council, many are asking questions about their ward and ultimately, the direction of the District.
The downfall of Harry Thomas Jr., as a member of the D.C. Council for Ward 5 has generated a great deal of discussion among the residents of Ward 5. The ward has been recognized as an economic microcosm of the city, with a solid black middle class, a growing Latino population and whites who some consider to be outsiders.
"We as a ward need to get organized because there are many changes that are taking place and we need to make sure that the views of the residents are known," said Albrette "Gigi" Ransom, an advisory neighborhood commissioner for 5C12 and a longtime activist in District politics. "There are economic development projects that are taking place on Rhode Island Avenue, North Capitol Street and Eastern Avenue and the residents need to have a say on those projects and how they are developed."
For example, Ransom cites the newly developed Rhode Island Row which boasts 274 residential units and 70,000-square-feet of retail space next to the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station. A stone's throw away from Rhode Island Place – home to the District's only Home Depot, a T.J. Maxx and a super-sized Giant Food store – which was built on the watch of former Ward 5 Council member Vincent Orange.
When Dan Mullin was transferred by his employer, the Boys Scouts of America Inc., from Virginia to the District, he shopped around and decided to make the Rhode Island Avenue area his home. Mullin, 56, who is white, said that he's happy to be in Ward 5.
"When I first came here seven years ago, I would say that the area was pleasant but there were a number of run-down businesses," he said. "Things are much better now, particularly with the development around the Metro station. We have retail, nice storefront windows and the overall appearance of the area looks better."
To some, Mullin could be considered the future of the ward because of his race. NeighborhoodInfo DC, a Web site that tracks trends in the District, indicated that the white population of the ward was 7.4 percent according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau report. Today, NeighborhoodInfo DC points out that in 2010 the white population jumped to 15 percent and many residents expect those numbers to dramatically increase in the coming years.
However, Mullin doesn't see himself as an outsider.
"I was born in the District," he said. "I can say that I did not encounter any hostility when I came here. My neighbors were very welcoming, and many people have moved in the neighborhood since I got here."
Ransom, 50, said that many longtime residents who are black are somewhat nervous about their new white neighbors.
"It has been a difficult conversation to have with some residents at times," she said. "You can see that when you read some of the listservs. But what it really comes down to is that we are all in this together."
While Ward 5's development prospects are positive, there are areas of concern.
Trinidad, a neighborhood known for having a high crime rate, is one of the ward's troubled spots. Despite its reputation, that didn't stop Ken Fealing from moving there from Ward 1 a few years ago.
"Trinidad is close to the 'H' Street corridor and close to North Capitol Street," Fealing, 47, said. "This is one of the reasons I moved to Ward 5. In the part of the ward I live in, people are moving into condominiums that were once apartment buildings near Gallaudet University."
He acknowledges that the Thomas scandal has taken its toll on the ward's image but he said that can be quickly repaired.
"We have to begin to repair the trust and we need to rebuild a sense of leadership integrity on the D.C. Council level," he said. "We have to be able to trust our council member."
