FYI AARP provided lots of valuable information and materials on services and resources for 55+ and caretakers for seniors at last month's Ward 5 Advisory Council meeting. Aging in Place was a hot topic.
Washington Hospital Center also presented on the results of their Ward 5 Health Survey. Diabetes is one of the top three illnesses in Ward 5. Plans are to release a more comprehensive report on the meeting after the May 15 election. Scroll down for details about the AARP Workshop. Alice
Building for a Healthy Community Invitation
Towards Building a Healthy Community in Washington DC
Greetings,
Recent AARP research indicates, nearly 90% of the 45+ population would like to stay in their community for as long as possible. In addition it is also important to remain near family and friends and be able to access needed services.
Livable Communities are places where people of all ages and abilities have, among other things, a range of travel choices to get safely where they need and want to go. These choices – walking, biking, driving and public transportation – help people stay connected and healthy. In a truly livable community, streets are built for people, not for cars, and neighborhood commercial areas are built for lingering and enjoyment, not for vehicle thru-put and getting commuters home faster after work.
You are invited to join AARP and Dan Burden, Executive Director, Walkable and Livable Communities (WALC) Institute, for an Active Living Workshop on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Brightwood Park United Methodist Church, 744 Jefferson Street NW, Washington, DC 20011
The WALC Institute team, led by Dan Burden and Sarah Bowman, will conduct a one-day Active Living Workshop in Ward 4 on Kennedy St NW between Georgia Ave and Kansas Ave. The goal of this workshop is to bring citizens, businesses, elected officials and government staff together to build capacity for livable communities by promoting a shared understanding of how the built environment impacts community health and wellbeing. The workshop will include examples and audits to illustrate how walkability and livability benefits a community and how an active community environment can be achieved.
The schedule for the workshop is as follows:
8:45 a.m. Participant registration
9:00 a.m. Workshop: setting the agenda and roundtable discussion
10:30 a.m. Walking Audit
11:30 a.m. Audit discussion and summary
11:45 a.m. Lunch
2:45 p.m. Workshop: presentation, tools and Q&A
