NEW DC DMV TEMPORARY DC REGISTRATION PROCESS
On May 30, 2012, DC DMV will reduce the issuance of 45-day paper temporary tags by issuing a 45-day hard tag to DC residents who need to take their vehicle through inspection due to the purchase of a used vehicle or the conversion of an out-of-state vehicle. This new process will reduce temp tag fraud eliminate a second visit to DMV after residents take their vehicle through inspection.
· Customers with newly purchased used vehicles that do not have a valid inspection will no longer be issued a 45-day paper temporary tag; instead, they will be required to title (and pay all fees such as excise tax) and register their vehicle with a hard tag reflecting a 45-day registration
· 45-day hard tag registration fee, including RPP, will cost $13
· The wording “Temporary Registration” will print on the registration window sticker
· After vehicle inspection, customers will renew their 45-day registration by mail or online, for the normal one or two year registration period, without making another in-person visit to DMV
DC DMV will continue to issue the 45-day paper temporary tag to out-of-state residents that recently purchased a used vehicle in DC, to new DC residents with expired out-of-state tags who have not been through DC inspection and to new DC residents with expired out-of-state tags who are waiting for their out-of-state title from the lienholder. The 45-day paper temporary tag will also be issued to salvage vehicles and commercial/for hire vehicles which must be inspected and classified by the inspection station prior to registration.
