Kathy,
It is funny that I know several who live around Turkey Thicket who in favor of the school coming and I'm sure that neither you nor I know all in the neighborhood. I actually typed my email from my phone while at the home of one of them before venturing to my family home on Randolph Street. Much like me they actually attended the old Brookland Elementary, played at the field house which was the original Turkey Thicket and grew up playing basketball on the courts and football of the field (which is now a baseball field). They actually have a young child who will more than likely end up going to the new school and they are overjoyed about it. Funny enough the exact same statement which I made was also what they said as I was talking with them and a few of their neighbors. Further I also know several on Randolph and 12th street just north of the campus who are in favor of it. The difference is that they aren't fussing and yelling.
Unfortunately just like most instances in our great ward some folks believe they speak for the entire ward even if it isn't the case and yet again this is a prime example. This opposition isn't as large as many think and further as I have said there are previous examples in the city of such projects working.

Subject: [ward5] Re: Seeking Clarification
Eric,
Please stop mischaracterizing the opposition to placement of a new
middle school at Turkey Thicket. The entire neighborhood immediately
surrounding Turkey Thicket is telling city officials that this is not a
good place to build the school -- for many legitimate reasons (including
safety reasons), not just to complain.
If city officials could open their minds to the possibility that (1)
they haven't thought of good reasons that this is a bad idea, and (2)
they haven't thought of some better alternative locations, this would be
a much more civil discussion.
As it stands, city officials -- without ever consulting the immediately
surrounding neighborhood -- made what they are calling a final decision
to site a middle school at Turkey Thicket. They are totally disregarding
the Turkey Thicket neighborhood's many RECENT years of fighting for
recreational facilities and the hard work of designing a new playground
(which is already supposed to be under construction for summer use).
What city officials propose is to take away many hours of heavily and
increasingly used recreational facilities at Turkey Thicket (rather than
expanding them). Nevermind what this neighborhood went through to get
those facilities. And nevermind what we think about re-purposing of this
public space in our neighborhood. We simply don't matter to city officials.
