Attached are the written testimonies of the Deputy Mayor for Education, the Chancellor and the State Superintendent given yesterday at the Council.  Today the public will testify on the facilities bill and the lottery, the witness list is also attached.  The facility bill does not require an assessment of charter use and provides for simply transferring buildings thru long term leases out of the public inventory to charter boards privately managed. There is no assessment or planning for the long term needs of a municipal system - my understanding is that the leases are for 25 or 50 years. There is also no provision for input by the neighboring community.  Please write and call your council members if you cannot attend today.

Below is the  information on testifying for next week. There are hearings on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  I will testify at each of the hearings next week and would be happy to work with anyone wanting to also testify.  You can also submit written testimony.  The Parent and Student Empowerment Act gives an outlet to register concerns, it does not acknowledge the necessary partnership with parents and the community.  The Governance Improvement Act specifies that the OSSE Superintendent can give a waiver from complying with the law if it will improve student achievement.  I believe this is a slippery slope. If the laws are a problem they should be changed instead of being applied selectively.  I will send additional information out on Sunday and  you have the notes from our meeting last week.  Please sign up this week and come next week.

Below  there is an important opportunity from Sally Schwartz for students to participate in a workshop on International Affiairs put on by the World Affairs Council free of charge.  Please get it to some deserving students.    Cathy

Looking for something interesting and worthwhile to do this summer?

I just got word from the World Affairs Council that they have a few vacancies left in their one-week International Affairs Student Leadership Academy (July 15-19, 2013) for high school students - and will be offering these last seats tuition-free (THAT'S FREE) to DC students who want to sign up. This is a great program for someone really interested in international issues or considering a career in the diplomatic or international relations fields.

If interested, contact Amanda Stamp directly at 202-293-1051 and follow the instructions below.

Please pass along to anyone you think might be interested. Obviously, this is very time sensitive!

Thank you.

Sally

Spaces are quickly being filled for the 2013 International Affairs Student Leadership Academy! This week-long free for students program is geared towards bringing students into contact with diverse and in-depth ways of thinking about current world issues. Utilizing the expertise of experts and world leaders, and offering the chance at direct contact with figures such as diplomats and officials, the Leadership Academy is a chance to heighten and bolster the understanding of students who will carry their knowledge with them as they pursue their studies, and bring their experiences back to the classroom. Interested parties can contact Global Education Director Amanda Stamp for information and registration at astamp@worldaffairsdc.org, or at 202.293.1051 <tel:202.293.1051> .
