SUMMARY:

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) seeks a highly experienced individual to lead the Association’s programmatic efforts to ensure all students have access to high quality education.

The NAACP National Education Program strives to ensure that all students have access to an equal and high-quality public education through advocacy training, policy development and guidance, building collaborative networks, and direct action to eliminate education-related racial and ethnic disparities in our public schools.

The current and ongoing work of the Education Program Includes:

·         Weighing in on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act

·         Ensuring the proper implementation of the Common Core State Standards

·         Working with State Conferences to advocate for the policy prescriptions found in “finding Our Way Back to First”

§  Universal Pre K

§  Effective Teaching

§  Expanded Learning Opportunities

§  Targeted Spending

·         Combating discipline disparities that impact children of color

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Director of Education’s duties and responsibilities will include the ability to:

•             Spearhead policy initiatives of the NAACP around a diverse range of education initiatives to improve access to quality education

•             Direct the development of education policy reports, training materials and other advocacy tools.

•             Increase the capacity of NAACP units to promote the NAACP’s education advocacy agenda at the state and local level, as well as on college campuses

•             Work with the Development staff to create and maintain new streams of revenue to support the NAACP’s education advocacy agenda.

•             Develop and maintain key relationships with governmental and community organizations to advance the NAACP’s education advocacy agenda.

•             Oversee the management of the NAACP Education Department’s budget in accordance with NAACP policies and procedures.

•             Supervise staff and contractors within the Education Department.

•             Represent the Association at external meetings, conferences and conventions.

•             Manage the growth and success of the NAACP Education Department and educational advocacy agenda.

•             Serve as staff liaison to the NAACP Board of Director’s Education Standing Committee.

•             Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies and personal qualities:

•             Graduate degree in law, public policy or education is preferred.

•             Ten years of professional experience working on educational issues in nonprofit, legal, academic or governmental sector.

•             Established credibility working with federal or state policymakers. 

•             Excellent analytical and writing skills.

•             Knowledge of state and federal civil rights policies and case law on educational issues.

•             Proven ability to manage staff and budgets.

•             Ability to manage multiple large scale projects.

•             Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communications skills.

•             Ability to travel upon request.
