[WardFive] Will you please vote with me...

Tomorrow, April 1st, 2014, is election day in DC.  I am honored to be on the ballot this year to be your next US Shadow Representative.  But there is no doubt you face a challenging decision when electing the person that will lead our city.  Mayor Gray's results have paid off for thousands of DC residents.  Results that even his opponents can't dispute.  Here are some of them:

·           Created more than 30,000 private sector jobs, reducing unemployment to the lowest rate since 2008 to 8.1%.
·          Delivered $187 million to create and preserve 10,000 affordable homes by 2020.
·         Created the most robust Pre-K program in the nation and under his watch our public schools have seen the largest test scores gains of any urban school district in the country.
·         Worked to expand health care for everyone in DC, as a result nearly everyone has health coverage in DC.
·         Stood up to Congress and prevented city shutting down during 16-day federal government shutdown.
·         Has one of the most inclusive and diverse administration in the history of the city.

As I seek the office of US Shadow Representative, to fight for the long due US Congressional representation of our city, I am motivated and look forward to having the support of a champion for DC Statehood and DC Congressional voting rights.

Don't let your judgment be impaired by irresponsible accusations that want to sway the election to benefit certain politicians.  Let's keep good governance in our city.  Mayor Gray is one of the most effective Mayor in our city's history, please vote with me for DC Mayor Vincent Gray.

Yours,

Franklin Garcia
Candidate for US Shadow Representative

P.S. I will volunteer for Vincent Gray tomorrow, and hope to run into some of you at the polls.

[WardFive] Fairlawn Market (formerly Yes! Organic) closing in two weeks

Fairlawn Market (formerly Yes! Organic) closing in two weeks

The reports are true. According to a reliable source on Twitter who spoke with an owner, Fairlawn Market will indeed be closing in two weeks. Reasons given for the closing: siting the new format of the store (selling traditional foods instead of organic) left the store about 2/3 too big and the profit margins too small. In the end, the challenges proved too great.

The end is near for Fairlawn Market
No word if anyone else will be taking over the lease but in all honesty any retailer would have a challenge there. It is just so difficult to get to and from the store from Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Personally, The Advoc8te hasn't been in there since they were about to close last time.

FYI  this is the second retailer to throw in the towel on east of the river this month. National clothing chain Dots is also exiting from the Shops at Park Village in Ward 8.

At time when nearby neighborhoods are seeing a big boost in retail and food options, east of the river continues to struggle.

Re: cheat_training_group Cheat next weekend

Megan and Tom,

I am pretty flexible as for times.  The latest I would want to leave is around 7p, but I can leave as early as 3, the earlier the better.  I am leaving from Fairfax, but if anyone wants to join, we could meet in Gaithersburg or Frederick at the park and rides.  I am only running once on Saturday.  Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks, Rick

[WardFive] DC Mayoral Candidates' Questionnaire on Public Education

DC Mayoral Candidates’ Questionnaires on Education

For Immediate Release: March 29, 2014

Candidates for mayor in the Democratic Primary were asked by an informal coalition of public education advocates and ward-based citizen’s organizations focused on public education, known as the “Fork in the Road” group*, to respond to 10 questions on public education in the District of Columbia. The questions spanned a range of important issues, including the track record of education reform and mayoral control, the achievement gap, funding equity, teacher and principal turnover, as well as the impact of charter schools, and parent and public disenfranchisement.

(note: Incumbent mayor Vincent Gray declined to respond to the questionnaire, as did Reta Jo Lewis, Vincent Orange and Carlos Allen.)

The candidates’ responses to the 10 questions can be read in their entirety at the below link:

[WardFive] Weekly HHW/E-Cycling Drop-Off Starts Sat. April 5

Weekly HHW/E-Cycling Drop-Off Starts Sat. April 5

Document shredding will continue to be offered the first Sat. of the month only.

The DC Department of Public Works announced today that DC residents will be able to bring their household hazardous waste and e-cycling to the Ft. Totten Transfer Station* every Saturday (except holidays), starting Saturday, April 5, 8 am to 3 pm.  DPW will continue to accept documents for shredding the first Saturday only (except holidays) of the month.  Also, residents may bring HHW and e-cycling to Ft. Totten the first Thursday only (except holidays) of the month.

District residents may bring toxic HHW items such as pesticides, batteries and cleaning fluids to Ft. Totten, along with e-cycling items such as computers, televisions and other unwanted electronic equipment.  On the first Saturday only, residents may bring up to five boxes of documents to be shredded.  No business or commercial material will be accepted.

To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the first Thursday of the month, 1 pm to 5 pm.  Items to be shredded cannot be accepted on Thursdays because these documents cannot be protected until the shredding contractor arrives on the first Saturday of the month.  For a list of all household hazardous waste and e-cyclables accepted by DPW, please click on the HHW link at www.dpw.dc.gov.

DPW reminds residents that certain batteries (lithium-based and batteries greater than 9 volts) should be taped before being brought to Ft. Totten.  Lithium-based batteries are most commonly found in cell phones, digital cameras and laptops.  Also, hearing aids, watches and keyless remotes typically use button cells that contain lithium.  To safely dispose of batteries with lithium or batteries of greater than 9 volts, put clear, masking or electrical tape on the batteries’ terminals.  Flat button batteries can be sandwiched between two layers of tape.  Examples are pictured on the next page.  Place these batteries in a separate container from other batteries that don’t require being taped, e.g., A, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries.

*Directions to Ft. Totten, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE:  Travel east on Irving Street, NW, turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn left on John F. McCormack Drive, NE and continue to the end of the street.  Directions from additional locations can be found at http://dpw.dc.gov/node/414922.
