It helps that we had been averaging between 21 & 27 miles a day after low mileage for the first couple of days....WAY glad I was in a Kayak and not a raft on that Lake I'd probably still be there

That's a long day! I did it in the raft but the lake was lower and the current was pretty good.

Just a word of encouragement to all as you head out this weekend. I recently did a self-support trip down the Grand Canyon 280 miles in 12 days from Lee's Ferry to Pearce Ferry. The last day was 45 miles in flat water, against a strong head wind most of the day (8:30 am to 6:30pm.) We were supposed to stop and camp but both camp sites on the lake were taken so we did the entire Lake Mead section in one day. Around mile 35, when we realized we were going to have to paddle out the last 10 miles in 2 hours to get off before sunset, I recalled the many times I made the Sandy to Sycamore run with the Cheat training group. I recalled it fondly as I let my mind blur as I continued to crank out mile after mile with out a stop....I kept telling the rest of the crew "don't stop, if you stop you will feel the pain just keep going!" LOL it worked! I was very grateful for the training Tom had given me as part of the Cheat Group otherwise I might still be paddling around in Lake Mead trying to make the take out :)GraysonFrom: JohnM <munnell13@gmail.com>

Tom calls it the "slow, grinding death". The masochists among us just
call it "Sandy to Sycamore". (Happens to be the normal course for the
50+ year old Potomac Downriver Race in May, too!)As you paddle, you are pretty much thinking "Are we #*%#ing there
yet?" And when you get to one of the usual break points, you wonder
'How long was that?" and "How much further?" With the help of Google
maps, here's an approximation of the distances from S-Turn to the
Sycamore Island inlet.S-Turn .00 miles
Maryland Chute 1.48 miles
Skull Island 1.71 miles
Anglers 1.87 miles
Yellow Falls 3.05 miles
Stubblefield 3.98 miles
I495 Bridge 4.84 miles
Sycamore Island 7.38 milesAs another way of thinking about it, the traditional stops are around
Anglers, the I495 Bridge and Sycamore...which makes the first leg
about 2 miles, the second leg about 3 miles and the last about 2.5
miles.See --- it's not really that far. Just wait until you do the attain! Really.JOHNP.S, The Cheat is almost 10 miles --- but has enough current at most levels to seem faster than the Potomac.
