Today is Epiphany Day (Happy Three Kings Day). I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday celebration, and that you have a prosperous New Year.
I want to share our newsletter (enclosed), DC Statehood Today. In this special edition we highlight some accomplishments of 2015. I hope you find the information useful, expect a monthly edition.
I also want to thank and congratulate President Barack Obama on his initiative to help prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands. We know this is not enough to totally prevent the hideous mass shootings we have seen in recent times, but helping keep guns out of the wrong people, is a good approach.
Some highlights of the President’s action:
· Require any business that engages in the sale of guns to obtain a federal license to do so and conduct background checks.
· Requires the ATF Bureau (agency in charge of regulating firearms) to issue a rule requiring background checks for purchasers of certain dangerous firearms.
· Encourages greater communications between federal and state authorities on criminal history information.
· Instructs the FBI to overhaul the background check system to make it more efficient and accurate.
· Calls for increased funding to ATF for the hiring of 200 new ATF agents and investigators to help enforce existing gun laws.
· Requires inclusion of mental health information from the Social Security Administration (SSA) in the background check system about beneficiaries who are prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Please look at some of the events coming up, below. We have a call to President Barack Obama to address Taxation without Representation for the citizens of the District of Columbia in his last State Of The Union Address (SOTU) to the nation, on January 12th. I hope he finally heeds our call, as he may be a “regular” resident of our city in the not too distant future.
I hope you join me at some of these events. Thank you.
