[WardFive] Snow Safety Tips - snow.dc.gov

City Services - What You Need to Know
City services should be available as usual if weather permits.

Warming centers:
The Department of Human Services opens select recreation centers to be used as both warming centers and overflow hypothermia shelters during hypothermia and cold alerts. See the location of warming centers.

Trash collection:
DPW will collect trash and recycling from its Thursday and Friday customers on Friday to ensure the week's collections are completed before Saturday's snow storm. This week DPW pushed back collections one day due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, so Friday's collections had been scheduled for Saturday. We urge residents to put their trash and recycling out tonight.

Utilities:
Did you know that utilities cannot be disconnected when the temperature is below 32 degrees? This law applies to natural gas or electricity used for heating. Watch the Public Service Commission's video or visit dcpsc.org and know your rights.

Locate a towed vehicle:
Call (202) 541-6083

Report power outages:
Call Pepco's 24-Hour Outage Report Line at 1 (877) 737-2662.
For downed wires, call Pepco immediately at (877) 737-2662 and press two (2).
Track the city's snowplows once a snow event has started

Have trees or debris removed:
Call the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at 311

If you see a homeless person who may be impacted by extreme temperatures:
Call the Hypothermia Hotline at 1 (800) 535-7252 or 311

Snow Safety Tips

Supplies You Should Have Before a Snow Storm:
NOAA Weather Radio or battery-powered or hand-crank radio to receive weather reports and emergency information.
Flashlight and extra batteries.
Extra food and water. High-energy food, such as dried fruit or candy, and food requiring no cooking or refrigeration are best.
Special supplies (such as medications) for seniors, family members with disabilities, infants, young children and pets.
First-aid supplies.
Emergency heating source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc.
At least a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day). Store in sealed, unbreakable containers.
A three-to-five-day supply of non-perishable canned food and a non-electric can opener.
Working fire extinguisher and smoke detector.
Change batteries in all your equipment at least once a year. An easy way to remember is to do it when you turn your clocks back in the fall.
Have rock salt to melt ice on walkways.
Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.
CDC and HSEMA Preparedness Recommendations:
CDC Winter Weather Preparedness
Protective Actions for Extreme Cold
Winter Storm Tips for Pedestrians
Dress properly for the weather, including a hat, scarf, coat, gloves, socks and water-resistant shoes or boots.
Walk slowly and carefully.
When walking at night, wear outer clothing that contrasts with the white snow.
When walking during the day, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare.
Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going.

Tips to Prevent Cold Related Illness
The best way to prevent hypothermia and frostbite is to stay inside. If you must go outside, here are some tips to stay warm and frostbite-free
