RE: Statement on Donald Trump’s Assassination Comment
I strongly condemn Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call on “Second Amendment people” to assassinate Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Mr. Trump’s hateful speech has now reached a new dangerous low.
We are not new to this type of subliminal messaging calling to shoot those who have opposing views. You will recall when Sarah Palin had a site that included controversial imagery: gun sight symbols over various congressional districts in political play. One of the targets on the map was that of Representative Giffords. Sarah Palin followed with Tweets to her supporters: “Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!” The outcome on January 8th, 2011 was 18 people shot, and six dead.
It is shameful that Mr. Trump’s supporters, instead of repudiate his comments, are doubling down on his comment by calling them “a joke gone bad.”
I appeal to those supporters of Mr. Trump that may want to take him up on his comment to understand that Secretary Hillary Clinton, nor any other serious politician, is threating to do away with the Second Amendment. The only conversation on the table is ensuring that terrorists, criminals, or mentally unstable people have no access to guns.
I call on Mr. Trump to stop calling on his supporters to engage in violence, and instead to call on unity and peace.
Sincerely,
Franklin Garcia
US Representative for the District of Columbia (Shadow)
