Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie's statement on the fire this morning in the Fort Lincoln community:
"Shortly after 5:00 am this morning, 20 units and 80 DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) personnel responded to a 2-alarm fire at 3400 Banneker Drive NE in Fort Lincoln, a senior residential facility owned by the DC Housing Authority. While I am relieved to report there was no loss of life, two residents were treated for smoke inhalation, and three firefighters suffered non-critical injuries while responding. Unfortunately, residents of more than 25 apartments have been displaced. The Red Cross, DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), Mayor's Office of Community Relations and Services, and DC Housing Authority are working to support and find alternative housing for displaced residents.
My heart goes out to the displaced residents and those impacted by this incident. I thank the brave firefighters and first responders who prevented any loss of life and additional damage to property.
I will be following up to ensure these residents receive the services and resources they need and deserve, as well as working with DC Housing Authority to make sure the building is repaired and the residents can return as soon as possible."
