August 21, 2014 Dear Education Stakeholder: I am pleased to announce that the D.C. Advisory Committee on Student Assignment has completed its final recommendations on DCPS boundaries and student assignment policies, and Mayor Gray has agreed to adopt their recommendations in full. The revised boundaries, feeder pathways, and policy recommendations were developed after ten months of extensive data collection and analysis, Advisory Committee meetings, and hundreds of hours considering feedback submitted via community meetings, focus groups, and e-mail. As a result, we have thoughtful policies that will complement and reinforce our ongoing work to improve the quality of public education for children across the District of Columbia. Boundary revisions will take effect for the 2015-16 school year, subject to extensive phase-in policies that seek to minimize the impact of changes on families. It is important to note that no student will have to leave their current DCPS school based on these changes. Over the next couple of months, the Chancellor and I will work with stakeholders to develop an implementation plan for the additional recommendations, and will transmit our plan to the Mayor and the public by the end of October. The members of the Advisory Committee, Mayor Gray and I are grateful for the tremendous participation by community members in this process. This work was long overdue, and though these issues are complex and require difficult choices, we are confident that we have landed on a set of policies that will support our shared vision of high quality schools of right for every child in the District of Columbia. If you have any questions regarding this process or these recommendations, please email dme.studentassignment@dc.gov or call the DCPS Chancellor's Response Team at 202-478-5738. Sincerely, Abigail Smith Deputy Mayor for Education |
