[WardFive] WARD 5 Homeward Emergency Meeting Recap and Notes - Feb 22, 2016

Hello Neighbors!

Please find the attached meeting notes from the WARD 5 Emergency Meeting - a response to Mayor Bowser's Homeward Plan,  held February 22, 2016, at the New Cannan Baptist Church.  Thank you all for showing up and showing out.   There are 3 additional attachments within the file.

Meeting Recap:

In light of Mayor Bowser unveiling her HOMEWARD program, the Langdon Park and Woodridge-South Community Associations called for an emergency follow up meeting.  During the meeting, the majority of the residents agreed that we do need to do right by our homeless citizens.  In fact, Ward 5 is already meeting the challenge to support our homeless citizens each and every day.  There is no disputing the need and urgency to close DC General and the necessity to provide our homeless citizens with more dignified, healthier, and safer options.  As a result, our goal was to discuss viable alternative locations within Ward 5 given that the site at 2266 25th Place NE sits in an industrial area with significant ramifications.  Overwhelmingly, the residents agreed that smaller sites within residential communities dispersed throughout Ward 5 would better serve our homeless citizens and cost the District Government far less than what is being proposed.

Let your voices be heard:

Ward 5, please lend your voices to the upcoming hearing on March 17th at 10 AM at the Wilson Building in Room 500.  We know that we can and should do better by our homeless citizens.  You must register to testify during the hearing.  Sign up here: http://action.dccouncil.us/page/s/sign-up-to-testify

What others are saying:

Many grassroots efforts have begun as a result of the Mayor's plan to place shelters in all 8 Wards.  Check out http://homewarddc.org/.  Though residents all over the city are responding to the Mayor's plan to close DC General, it is really important that we let our elected officials know just how we feel.  Please write, call, or tweet your elected officials to persuade them to select a better site in WARD 5.
