Hello Cheat Trainers!
-- The Cheat Instructors and I are super excited that you will be joining us this spring (it's coming, I promise :) for Cheat Training! Here is some information about what to expect over the next two months.
We have have a great line up of instructors this year! Cheat Regular will be led by Tom, Steve-O, Charlie Miller, Ashley Nee, and legend of the Alseseca, Sofi Reinoso. They will be assisted by Jen Sass, Mike Graham, Jim Wilson, Keith and me- Ashley McEwan.
Cheat Elite will be led by Bobby Miller and dad squad Eric Brooks and Andrew O'neill.
Our first meeting is this week. Because daylight savings starts next weekend, we want to meet an hour earlier this week to get some time on the river before sunset. For Cheat regular, meetings are Wednesdays at Anglers Inn for attaining. We usually ask people to arrive anytime between 5-6 pm. This week please arrive between 4-5 pm. Check in with me or Tom in the lower lot, we will pair you with an instructor and you can head up stream. Turn around time is sunset- 6:15 this week. Turn around is a chance to build endurance and strategy by racing down to the Anglers beach together.
For Cheat Elite, we like to all meet at the same time to head out as a group. Usually meet at Anglers on Thursdays at 6 pm. This week please meet in the lower lot, dressed and ready for the river at 5 pm.
There are times that we will work on different skills and try alternate attainments. We will send an email with the plan or let you know when you arrive.
You will need a long boat for these workouts as well as enough thermal protection to keep you safe on the water. This means drysuit, pogies, booties, layers! It is better to be overdressed, especially for this first month when the water is so cold.
On Saturdays, both groups will meet at 9 am at Sycamore. Cheat Regular meets in the lower lot on Clara Barton Parkway, near the pedestrian bridge. Cheat Elite meets in the upper lot- on MacArthur Blvd. If you are confused about where, let me know and Ill be more specific. We will run shuttle up to Great Falls and head downstream, taking out around noon. If the water is high and you are not yet confidant running the gorge in your long boat, Cheat Regular attendies may bring a creeker. We will divide up into groups roughly based on how fast you want to paddle that day!
Some dates to put on your calendar- We will take a forward stroke video and do some analysis, likely 3/27 & 3/28. Please try to be there! The first Cheat Trip is Saturday April 6th. Much more info and speculation will follow. The Seneca Showdown is Sunday April 28th at Riley's Lock. And the Cheat Race is May 3rd!
Let me know if you have any questions by replying to laks@calleva.org. Also, if you find yourself missing classes, please shoot me an email and let me know what is going on. You can gain a lot of confidence, skill and endurance during these two months and it all starts with showing up. Even if the water is high, the weather is crap, or you are just not feeling it, come and put in a little bit of time on the river. You really won't ever regret it.
I am so stoked to see you all this week and get started with the most wonderful time of the year- CHEAT TRAINING!
Cheers,
Ashley McEwan
