Good Morning all,
Thanks for the support everyone. I think that lots of parents and older siblings love to light some personal fireworks for their kids and kids in the neighborhood. For like 10 years, I bought a lot and lit them over in Woodridge.
Jeremy - I don't think this a fair representation of what is a result of neighborhood fireworks. This happens all the time at various events so if this is the case, then we just shouldn't have any neighborhood festivities! Lots of this behavior goes back to spending money on things like Street Cars instead of their Schools and Rec Centers over the years and putting actual programs. Like I told many of you, it won't be realized until some of us right here in Brookland start getting shot or shot at. Go back and read my post regarding PIT BULLS!
As for watching over the monuments, not everybody wants to or have the time to make that trek and fight the crowds after having a family barbecue or being in the heat all day. No one wants anyone hurt or accidental fires. I wonder what the report is about that here from last night.
Faye - as for your statistics, there is so much statistics of everything that we do that is not good. Whether it is meat with hormones, fish from Chile and China, drinking Lead Based Water in DC, Spending 2 Billion for fancy transportation because some folks don't want to ride the bus with certain others --- THERE IS STATISTICS ON THAT AS WELL. Imagine, 2 Billion has to be promised to be spent to entice some folks to catch a BUS on Spinners!! Imagine what that money can do for our community! Some of us might not be shot at two years from now. What is the longest flight a Bullet has taken - from the day one started suffocating the child and his/her brain to the day their bullet hits the target ----- "the day that the music died" - remember that song!! Bye Bye Miss American Pie!!! What would 4th of July be without neighborhood fireworks???? I swear!!
We all understand the concerns and there is a risk involved. Get out into the neighborhood and make friends with some of your neighbors and you too will probably enjoy the "neighborhood fireworks". Might not be as grand as the one on the Monument grounds but it is personally exciting and a memory for many of us.
By the Way, I illegally parked infront of a Police Officer on T/Connecticut and without even looking at them, I watched from the medium in the middle of Connecticut Ave with a friend and our families watching the Monument fireworks and then I came back and watched it with my daughter in Turkey Thicket. Mr. Peloquin is right, it was nice to see the silent competition amongst the various groups - everyone seemed to be having fun!!

It is not like MPD does anything regarding illegal fireworks usage, so it is not going anywhere. You can call MPD and they won't do anything. And maybe they should given what happened last night in the area:

Best,

I agree with you Melissa... Its too much. And with the heat and how dry everything is, I was worried about fires. Colorado banned fireworks this year which I think was a great idea. . Isnt it enough to watch the fireworks display over the monuments? I guess not.

Happy 4th of July!
I have started to dread the 4th. On our block and many others blast off fireworks that are illegal and dangerous. Last year it went beyond 11pm and way past my kid's bedtime. My son is now terrified of fireworks. For the past two years I have called 311 but they never come. Any advise? or just let it go for one day of fun for some and me picking up another shattered picture that falls off my wall from a blast....
Thanks,
Melissa
