Subject: Empower DC - Save Our Schools All City Summit - Saturday,January 12

Hello everyone,

Now that we are back in the full swing of things for the new year, I wanted to remind you about our Citywide summit on School Closures that is taking place this Saturday the 12th from 12-4pm.  Full details are below, I also wanted to encourage everyone to save the date and join us to support students, parents and community members from around the country who will be giving testimony on January 29th at the Federal Department of Education on the impact of school closures.  We believe that school closures disproportionately affect communities of color and are being used as another tool to destabilize and force people out of their communities.  Details for the hearings are below as well.

  • Saturday January 12th – Citywide summit on School Closures – 12-4pm – Guildfield Baptist Church (1023 Otis Street, NE – Parking is available and its also 2 blocks from Brookland-Catholic university Metro Station – Red Line)

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/events/101765746660856/

Join us to hear from real experts, those directly affected, about the real impact school closures have on our communities.  We will also be preparing for action we will be taking in the coming year to fight school closures.  Lunch and childcare will be provided.  To RSVP please contact me at 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email at daniel@empowerdc.org

  • Tuesday January 29th – Journey to Justice hearings at the Federal Department of Education on the impact of school closures.

Building on the work our national coalition of grassroots organizations fighting school closures did over the past year we committed the DOE to have these hearings.  We want to pack this hearing room and join our allies from around the country in saying that School Closures are unjust and unfairly targeting communities of color. The hearings begin at 2pm on the 29th Department of Education (400 Maryland Avenue Southwest).  If you are interested in attending please contact me directly - 202-234-9119 xt. 104 or via email at daniel@empowerdc.org

Lastly, I wanted to share this map of schools that have been closed and those that are being proposed for closure.  As you can see the higher concentration of closures are in area of the city with higher populations of communities of color.
