Subject: Empower DC-Education Campaign - Updates and next steps

Hello all,

Thanks to everyone who joined us yesterday at our press conference to announce the legal strategy we plan on taking to block the school closures.  I am including below several links to press stories that covered yesterday's press conference and Ed. committee hearing with Kaya Henderson.

As we move forward with the legal route, we will be looking for parents of directly impacted DCPS students from schools that are planned to be closed.  If you are a parent or know someone that may be interested please have them contact me directly

(202-234-9119 xt. 104 or daniel@empowerdc.org) with any questions.

Important Dates:

Tuesday January 29th – Journey for Justice, hearings at the Department of Education on the Impact of School Closures

2:00 – 6:00pm at DOE (400 Maryland Ave, SW) – Support students, parents and community members from around the country in calling for a National Moratorium on School Closures.  Listen to testimony from those directly impacted on the negative effects of unjust/discriminatory school closures.  Following the hearings at around 4:15pm, we will be marching to and holding a vigil at the MLK Jr. memorial.

Tuesday February 5th – Mayor's State of the District Address

Folks many of us are very concerned with the current "state of the district", lets make sure to be present at this event and show a visible organized presence of DC residents who want an end to the unjust cycle of school closures.  Make sure to RSVP to ensure your seat:

Seating will be on a first-come basis.  To ensure a reserved seat, please RSVP to mayorgrayevents@dc.gov not later than cob Tuesday, January 29th with your name and the name of your guest.  If you have any questions, please contact my Deputy Chief of Staff, Sheila Bunn, at sheila.bunn@dc.gov.
