Councilmember McDuffie Addresses DCPS' School Consolidation Plan

Washington, DC – Today, D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) released the "School Consolidation Plan of 2013."  There are five impacted schools in Ward 5 – Spingarn High School, Spingarn STAY, Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Hamilton Molten Academy and Mamie D. Lee School.

Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) released the following statement about the school consolidation:

"Today, I learned that Chancellor Henderson plans to move forward and consolidate schools in Ward 5.

"The Chancellor has assured me that Spingarn High School will not remain closed, but will be completely modernized into a state-of-the-art career and technical educational center. While I recognize the challenges presented with temporarily consolidating Spingarn, a newly renovated school will provide the community with expanded vocational programming and education amenities. Furthermore, the Chancellor stated that Thurgood Marshall Elementary School will remain in DCPS' inventory and that she is committed to reopening the school when there is a sufficient population growth in that area.  Additionally, the Chancellor indicated her commitment to work with the community to find alternate uses for the campus while the school remains closed.

"Moving forward, it will be important that the Chancellor show how the proposed cost savings from the school consolidation plan will be used to improve the quality of education at the receiving schools.  Likewise, it is imperative DCPS work together to turnaround  underperforming and under enrolled schools, while doing a better job of making District of Columbia's public schools more competitive with public charter schools."

Chancellor Henderson will brief the Council's Committee on Education about the "School Consolidation Plan of 2013" on Wednesday January 23 at noon in Room 412.  The public is invited to attend.
