CALL TO HELP NOYES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
(202) 636-8191
January 18, 2013
Dear 5B04 and Surrounding Community –

I completed my 5B04-initiated introductory meeting today with Noyes ES principal, Mr. Winston Cox.  Principal Cox is a long-time public school educator with a background teaching in New England and DC area public schools.  In our hour plus meeting to determine what I can do to help this 5B04 DCPS, I first came away concluding Principal Cox is a highly intelligent, committed, energized and engaged principal.  Principal Cox understands very practically the challenges currently existing at his Noyes school.  A key emphasis from Principal Cox during our meeting was his deep concern about the impact and stigmatization to his students' self-esteem by the highly publicized negative media and Frontline pieces.  While Principal Cox acknowledges certain academic deficiencies, he spoke compassionately and with great empathy about his children's self-esteem.  Noyes has roughly 300 students (believe that # is correct) and serves from Headstart to 8th graders.  The facilities at Noyes Elementary School are beautiful.

As ANC commissioner of the 5B04 district wherein Noyes ES is located, and in conjunction with my goal to offer 5B04 ANC assistance to this DCPS (as I have done with the DCPS schools in my former 5A07), several key volunteer efforts are needed which I urge our community to assist.

To that end, on behalf of Noyes Elementary School, this is the formal 5B04 clarion call to our community seeking volunteers to help Noyes students and staff in any of the following areas:

(1)         VOLUNTEER BUS TRANSPORTATION NEEDED:  Recess Play area of Noyes ES: Upcoming Noyes Park Work: DC General Services called me on Wed., Jan. 16 to tell me that from February-June 2013, the parcel of public land on Franklin between 10th and 12th ("Noyes Park") will be fenced off to the public to begin the Noyes Park work.  This parcel is used by Noyes ES for recess.  During this Feb-June period, Noyes ES students will have no outdoor recess play space.  Their closest alternative is Turkey Thicket but bus transportation for roughly 50-70 students per recess period is an issue.  If anyone owns a bus transportation service and is willing to volunteer this service Mon-Fri – from Noon to 1PM/ish, please contact Noyes Principal Mr. Wilbert Cox or Ms. Asaki Shittu ("Ms. Asaki") (202) 281-2580, email: winston.cox@dc.gov; asaki.shittu@dc.gov.  Address: 2725 10th St. NE, Washington, DC 20018.
(2)          VOLUNTEER READING TUTORS NEEDED: Daily Extended After-School Program:  Each school day, from 3:15pm-5:15pm, Noyes ES provides after-school tutoring in reading and math.  Principal Cox really seeks reading tutors.  If you are willing to volunteer as a reading tutor, please contact Noyes Principal Mr. Wilbert Cox or Ms. Asaki Shittu ("Ms. Asaki").  Telephone: (202) 281-2580; email: winston.cox@dc.gov; asaki.shittu@dc.gov.  (I PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS!)
