Dear Ward 5 Community,
As many of you are aware, on Thursday afternoon Chancellor Henderson released her final school consolidation plan. Like many of you, after reading the final plan I was saddened and disappointed – it took some time to digest.
In mid-November, when the Chancellor first released her initial proposal for school consolidation, the Ward Five Council on Education worked with both the community and our Councilmember to develop a strategy and voice our strong opposition to the Chancellor's plan. On December 11th, the Ward Five Council on Education presented our counterproposal to the Chancellor and members of her leadership team. Our Ward Five Quality Education Proposal clearly outlined the vision that the community believed would improve the quality of education in our ward. We provided alternatives to school closures and ways to help our ward move toward the quality level of education that our children deserve.
Neighborhood schools have been, and will continue to be, the cornerstone of our community. School closures and consolidations have torn apart communities and pushed students and their families out of DCPS. The void that has been left has now been filled with other options that, although they provide alternatives, do not invest in the foundation of our communities and promote community cohesion.
Moving forward, the Ward Five Council on Education will continue to work closely with our Ward 5 family to develop a strategy that will not only meet the needs of our community, students and families, but will work to hold DCPS accountable and make sure they provide our children with a world-class education.
