DC Snow Team To Deploy Tonight, Wed., Jan. 23
Overnight Snow Fall Expected To End By AM Rush Hour
.
The District Snow Team (Department of Public Works and District Department of Transportation) will deploy about 190 plows that will be on their routes at 10 pm tonight. Major streets, bridges, elevated structures are being pre-treated with a brine/beet juice mixture to help prevent snow from sticking to the pavement. The weather forecast calls for snow to fall between 10 pm and 6 am with a possibility of up to one inch of accumulated snow.
“Unlike previous snow events this season, roadway temperatures are well below freezing so snow likely will be on the ground when the morning rush hour gets underway,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “We want motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to be especially cautious as they travel throughout the District in the early morning. This is important since so many people leave the house for work and school before daybreak.”
Snow Safety and Preparedness Tips: People driving, walking or bicycling around the District should travel cautiously. Property owners are asked to pre-treat their sidewalks with abrasives and remove snow within 24 hours of the end of the storm, and assist their elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for our drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.” Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after snowstorms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather. Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.
