Dear Community - I attended last night's Oxbridge Development ZC hearing. In response to comments made by the developer during the hearing, I then opted to formally testify for the record in opposition to the project. While ANC 5B voted to support this project, I voted against it. I testified before ZC in my capacity as SMD commissioner of 5B04.
Specifically, my focus was to contradict and counter the repeated justification mantra in the app. - and stated during the hearing - that this project adds value to the neighborhood, retains its character fits and supports the city's housing supply.... (other stuff too but I forget what else). In the low density, single family home character of 5B04, current development includes 4 different apt/condo projects; 1 office building and 1 bar;
You may view the hearing in its entirety on the ZC website (http://view.earthchannel.com/PlayerController.aspx?&PGD=dczoning&eID=295).
However, what most interesting to see and hear involved:
(1) several of the 901 Monroe 200 footers and the rep I found for them years ago (Barbara Kahlow) testified in support of the project because they believe it is better for them than the 901 project;
sidebar: you will hear that the 901 Monroe developers are still enthralled in legal battle the 200 footers residents; I understand oral argument in this case is set for June before the Court of Appeals;
(2) the medical business directly next to the Oxbridge parcel (corner 9th and Lawrence) also testified against the project citing anticipated parking issues;
(3) McDuffie sent a letter of support for this project; and
(4) No surprise.... ZC demonstrated its ongoing commitment to pushing their mandated agenda for this city... regardless of its impact on current residents and propertyowners. Their focus is on development and developers. Clearly, they have their marching orders and, frankly, I view ZC could care less about citizens and neighborhood impact.
(5) After interesting commentary and dialogue from ZC commissioners, this application was approved by ZC...
I hope you watch the hearing ...
Very kind regards,
Commissioner Carolyn C. Steptoe

WHAT IS AN ANC?
The Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) are locally elected bodies which shall advise the Council of the District of Columbia, the Mayor and each executive agency, the Government of the District of Columbia, all independent agencies, boards and commissions with respect to all proposed matters of District of Columbia governmental policy including but not limited to decisions regarding planning, streets, recreation, social service programs, education, health, safety, and sanitation which affect the Commission area. In each of these areas, the intent of the ANC legislation is to ensure input from an advisory board that is made up of the residents of the neighborhoods that are directly affected by government action. The ANCs are the body of government with the closest official ties to the citizens in a neighborhood. Commissioners serve without compensation. See PL 93-198 and DCL 1-21, as amended.
