Re: cheat_training_group UY training guide - John Regan

agreed completely. i am guessing it was written in the 70s? when did the UY first start getting conmercially rafted?

the description of meatcleaver as a WW II pilot cracks me up.

i was also struck by how every rapid was a Class V, including ones that i don't think of as rapids.

John Regan took me on my very first UY paddle - reading that you can imagine why i got so terrified!

That was a good read.  How long ago was it written?  According to American Whitewater there is only one class V on the river, Charlie's Choice.  In my opinion, Charlie's Choice is not a class V unless you run certain lines.  The Standard lines through Charlie's are class IV.

This is a good info but do not let it scare you too much.  I believe it was written many, many years ago.  For those of you that have run the Nantahala River in North Carolina, Nantahala Falls use to be considered a class V, now it is considered an easy class III.  Please take that into perspective.

Also, I worked as a raft guide for many years.  Raft companies like to bump up the rating of many of the rapids so their clients think they are doing harder rapids.  The raft companies on the New rRver tell their clients the New is class V.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey all you UY runners,

I just thought you may enjoy this write-up (attached) of the UY from river legend John Regan. I think the guide is a great way for new UY runners to remind themselves of the river and rapids, reviewing it all mentally. When I am learning a new river I try to run through it all in my mind.

People say that John Regan has run the UY more than any other person, and I dunno, but I think maybe it may be true. He grew up in the Asheville area and as a young teenager was one of the first boaters, later working to train the UY raft guides. Now he is a driver for LiquidLogic. He lives just outside of Friendsville, and is still often spotted on the UY. John Regan led me on my second trip down the UY, and used his full "raft guide" style that managed to scare me soooo badly that I finally had to be separated from him (Sean and Seth Chapelle took over and calmed me down and led me the rest of the way - they were using hand paddles) because he'd turned me into a nervous wreck. Reading this guide, you can see why! :)

Enjoy, stay safe, and enjoy the UY!
