LOCATIONS FOR TONIGHT'S TRANSITIONAL SHELTER MEETINGS IN ALL EIGHT WARDS
Tonight, District officials will host the community meetings in each Ward to discuss the plan, review designs for each short-term facility, and solicit community input.
All community meetings are open to the press and public.

Transitional Shelters in All Eight Wards
The Homeward DC Plan would shutter DC General Homeless Shelter
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Tuesday February 9, Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled to the members of the Council of the District of Columbia her administration's plans to locate one small neighborhood-based housing development in each of the District's eight wards, including; six locations for short-term family housing, one location for apartment-style transitional family housing, and one location to serve as housing for single women only.
Each of the short-term housing facilities will accommodate up to 50 families with secure private rooms, places for children's studies and activities, comprehensive social services, and 24 hour on-site management and security. The women's shelter will house up to 213 single women with an on-site health clinic and a medical bed.
Mayor Bowser is expected to submit The Homeward DC Plan to the council this week. The plan, when approved, will follow legislation passed by the council in 2015 to replace the troubled DC General Shelter with the smaller facilities.
"I join my colleagues in applauding Mayor Bowser, Director Brenda Donald, Director Laura Zeilinger and the administration for taking the bold steps necessary to create these neighborhood-based residences," stated Councilmember Bonds, adding, "While I anticipate that there will be some tweaking to the plan, I remain confident that a final plan will satisfy all because we need to support these new residents as members of our neighborhoods." Adding further, "the Homeward DC plan, while a major step is but one approach to address homelessness and the affordable housing crisis facing the District of Columbia."
On Thursday, February 11 at 6:30 PM, the Mayor will host a community meeting at each ward site (See Below) to discuss the proposal and to provide an update on the District's plan to end homelessness in our city.

Fellow Washingtonian,
Last fall, the Council of the District of Columbia took a bold step forward when they voted to close DC General, the District's largest family shelter for families experiencing homelessness. The Council stood with me and thousands of residents from all 8 wards to support the District's plan to replace DC General with small, safe and dignified short-term housing facilities in each ward.
After months of scouting locations, crunching the numbers and countless meetings, we're ready to take the next step forward to close DC General and end homelessness in the District once and for all.
Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, I will meet with the Council to discuss the plan. You can watch the meeting at Mayor.DC.gov/Live.
On Thursday evening at 6:30 PM, my team will host a community meeting in your ward to discuss the short-term housing facility and provide an update on the District's plan to end homelessness in our city. This will be just the first of several conversations over the coming months.
