Fellow Washingtonian,
Last fall, the Council of the District of Columbia took a bold step forward when they voted to close DC General, the District's largest family shelter for families experiencing homelessness. The Council stood with me and thousands of residents from all 8 wards to support the District's plan to replace DC General with small, safe and dignified short-term housing facilities in each ward.
After months of scouting locations, crunching the numbers and countless meetings, we're ready to take the next step forward to close DC General and end homelessness in the District once and for all.
Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, I will meet with the Council to discuss the plan. You can watch the meeting at Mayor.DC.gov/Live.
On Thursday evening at 6:30 PM, my team will host a community meeting in your ward to discuss the short-term housing facility and provide an update on the District's plan to end homelessness in our city. This will be just the first of several conversations over the coming months.
