Re: cheat_training_group Cheat Race Fear and Loathing

My team is Half-Fast LAKS. All are welcome. The plan is to paddle straight through but expect to only be Half-Fast, unlike Cheat Elite. I'm hoping to beat my 1:35 from last year but definitely intend to end with less bleeding.

Cheers

So I forgot to register early so I will be registering right before the race.

My team name will be starting with LAKS and ending with BLime.

Thinking my team name will be LAKS Su BLime.  Hopefully, I have other team members.  My goal is to be top 50 and paddle as hard as I can.  The only thing I guarantee is that there will be Bud Light Lime waiting for me at the finish line!

Great words Ashley! Every cheat race I laugh, cry, and stop feeling my arms, but isn't that what it's all about! It's a very soulful experience to be on the river relying on your personal skills to get you down. You will never be alone, there will always be another racer, safety raft, or beer drinking West Virginian near you. I challenge you all to race this Friday.

What are the teams this year? I am unaffiliated.

Thanks a lot for another great Cheat training season!  I had a great time with the Cheat Elite folks.  Unfortunately, I will be missing the race this year since I will be in Oklahoma City for the second Slalom Team trials.  Best of luck to all that complete the race.

Hi Cheat Trainers,

As a reminder we are holding an extra, bonus, Cheat attainment tonight.  Hope you guys can make it! Tom and Steve-O will be leading.

I was talking with a couple of paddling friends over the past week about the Cheat Race. I know everyone has various feelings about racing, reasons to participate or not, etc. Just as one perspective, it is incredibly humbling, character building, and ultimately confidence building to rely on yourself alone, paddling the river without stopping and as fast you can.  It is an hour and a half of intense self psycho-analysis, an invaluable annual tradition that I am sad to miss this year. Give yourself some boundaries and challenge yourself to really race, not float down with friends or see how many beers you can finish. (That's what Saturday is for.) Yes there is fear and anguish, broken boats and tears but there is also safety rafts at all the major rapids and the feeling of really having achieved something, a tangible result to how hard you worked this season.  Be proud of completing YOUR personal best. You have worked hard for this!

I am attaching a Google Doc for the Cheat Training party spreadsheet. Feel free to edit it to add what you are bringing or email me back and I will add you.

Thanks for being part of Cheat Training this year.  Look for a program evaluation form to come through after Cheat Fest.  We would love to get your feedback.  Have a great weekend!

Best,

Ashley McEwan
